Hi all,

So some here who have met me may remember that the past three years I've been studying towards a "Bachelor of Computing Systems" at Unitec (whether that's worth anything may be debatable, although I did get an IBM internship out of it). I have finally completed my studies, and am now in job seeking mode.

While I studied towards a networking and sysadmin path, I'm probably more general at this stage. I can do programming where required, and am willing and able to learn.

At IBM I was working with the testing team on a project, where I got to do a bit of stuff with VMware products and IaaS.

For those interested, my final project was an IoT based telemetry system, in which I ended up creating the web interface for. Needless to say, that involved learning the basics of JavaScript and web frameworks, something I had little to no knowledge of prior to beginning the project. I wouldn't call what I created "pretty" mind you...

Prior to my studies, I worked a couple of years in Civil Engineering as a "technician" role, which was basically performing various tasks not requiring an engineer. My main role was as a draftsperson, but I also had a bit experience with some GIS stuff as well. And then there's the few weeks where I got to play with a PLC (further work there didn't pan out unfortunately, otherwise I would have loved to have continued learning and working with that stuff).

Unfortunately I appeared to have left it a few weeks to late to apply for most 2018 graduate programs, so that will probably not be an option at this stage.

Location doesn't matter too much, although I would prefer somewhere in the North Island.

So please, if anybody has any advice for me on places to apply, or know of places or people who may be seeking candidates please let me know. I'm open to various different roles, although my preference would probably not be pure software development.

Regards,

Sherman

I know SkyCity are trying to fill up a number of jobs in their ICT department so you may fit the profile of one of these.  Check them out SkyCity Careers and good luck.  Even if you're not an exact match it would be worth sending your CV in as there are other roles coming up too.

Sounds to me like you have quite a practical and well rounded background and a can-do attitude - so a much better proposition than most graduates.

I have no idea whether/what they are hiring but would definitely get in contact with HR at Fisher and Paykel - both the Appliances and Healthcare companies.

Please keep us updated.

Hi Sherman,

Not sure if you're interested in this but my previous company is hiring for 2 positions, one is advertised, the other not yet.

Both are Graduate Positions.

The advertised one is for a Junior BI Developer: https://affinityid.bamboohr.com/jobs/view.php?id=25

The other one is for a Campaign Producer. The Job of a campaign producer would require some knowledge of XML/HTML/CSS and SQL but nothing that cannot be taught.

Basically, the job requires the person to generate reports, create and deploy email campaigns, conduct ISP testings, etc...

The company (Affinity ID) is an awesome place to work with great work culture. They have been helping graduates build careers in IT for years now (I was one of them). They also have very good documentations in place so you won't be left in the mud.

If you're interested, flick me a message with your CV and I'll pass it on to one of the managers.

Cheers,

Nick
