I'll assume I need to give the 4 weeks then . If I get offered a dream job (unlikely), then that would be differnet.

The chances of my employer agreeing to less than 4weeks is zero . He runs the company understaffed , so people leaving causes an issue for him .
Last 2 guys I worked with (same job in the company), employer asked them to to stay longer than the 4 weeks when they resigned .

Related to this..
when applying for a new job, I dont want my employer to know (for reasons below)
So any suggestions of how to put my last 2 years work in my CV, without giving away my current employer , just in case they ring him .

From what Ive seen , my employer has never had anything good to say about people who have left . He will critcise them after they have left . So I cant bank on a good reference from him .
Its very strange , he wont even tell his staff when someone has resigned . Perhaps he takes it personally ?

In your CV provide the normal employment history but provide a list of two or three references that are not your current employer.

Send in the CV and the next day ring them and see if you can get confirmation that they have received it.  Depending on how the conversation goes you could mention that the current employer is toxic hence why you've not listed them as a reference.  You could even list a the cell phone number of a trusted workmate if you have one as a reference, if you feel that would be a way around it.

You can also make a skills based CV instead of chronological.

if you need to do it to secure the next role, do it.

if its a min wage role the current employer is not going to go to court over it.

"burnt bridge"...pfft - many employers would cut you loose in a second and would not lose any sleep over it - i.e. lifetime employment and loyalty died a long time ago

and your legal entitlements remain - AL, holiday pay etc

i say this as someone who has hired scores of people over 30 years, managed teams of 200+ and "let go" of a fair few as well.

bottom line - do what you need to do - frame it as an ask in the 1st instance, but walk if you have to
