littleheaven: So who's joining me in the "refresh the Apple site every hour from midnight" party?

Me me me! Although it'll probably be more like tomorrow morning, 10 or 11am, judging from the iPhone 4S NZ launch last year.

jtan:
Benjip: Any update on any retailers who might be selling these handset-only tomorrow or midnight tonight?

Failing that, what time should we expect to be able to purchase online from Apple.co.nz?

This might answer your question.. http://www.stuff.co.nz/technology/gadgets/7732675/Midnight-launch-for-iPhone-5

Looks like major centres are getting a midnight launch. Failing that, normal Telecom/Vodafone stores will be at normal business hours (either 8-9am). I'd imagine other retail stores (Dick Smith, JB HiFi, etc) would also be selling them at their normal business hours but availability of stock is unknown...

Have been doing lots of ringing around over the
past couple of days, Dick Smiths won't have them on launch, Harvey Norman
contract only, Voda, Telecom contract only. 200 have been set aside for
corporate customers they are sold out as well. Another shipment due in Next
Friday some retailers will be selling outright then (very limited stock) So
possibly those of you who want to buy outright you may be in luck next
weekend...

I hope so, if it's not at midnight. I'll be dropping my kid at school at 9am and don't fancy trying to order on my current iPhone screen while hanging up school bags and administering hugs.

It would be an interesting exercise, if one were to consider swapping to a different platform, whether the cost of the alternate phone was enough below the cost of the new iPhone that you could re-buy all the apps and still come out even or better off. But then there's still the game stats and things like magazine subs that may not be transferrable.

There was a guy dressed in red holding a sign outside the vodafone building in Auckland this morning, saying 'be here at 12.01am, Friday 28th'

(At least I think it said 'be here', but I was on the bus)

littleheaven: I've been tempted in the last few months to look at an S3, but that means ditching the hundreds of dollars worth of apps I have on my iPhone. And my perfect score on Angry Birds ;o)

So who's joining me in the "refresh the Apple site every hour from midnight" party?

I'll probably do this. But it most likely won't happen.

I thought I would be a little smarter so wrote a quick script to poll the apple site and send me a text message as soon as it changes, save me having to keep checking it myself :)

Everyone are very tight lipped about it but have been told some of the leading
Edges and Yoobee stores will have them next weekend and will be offering them for sale outright as another shipment is due
in next Friday but have also been told due to world wide demand the amount NZ
wide will be extremely limited.

chrisjunkie: Yeah just looked - I'd be paying $400 extra for the phone. Maybe not.

Check that, and if you have over 12 months to go, check what the 12 month figure is. Then calculate the savings over the new plans (talking Telecom), I found that I am $100 better off over the last 2 months if I wear the break free, so on that the contact I am on , 13 months left, is not now a restriction at all.
