Hi folks,
Can anyone recommend a decent iPad app for using the Geekzone forums?
I found Tapatalk Forum App by accident (wasn't even looking for a "forum" app).
I don't know if the above app would even work with GZ.
TIA.

Safari app on iPad is your only option. Or some other Browser app for that matter.

Fair enough. That's what I'm using at the moment.

Would be nice. But, no big deal.

what is the benefit of using an app when it works perfectly well within safari?

I've never understood the desire to have an app for stuff that works perfectly with browsers

I can vouch for Tapatalk being a much better experience for using Forums than the browser is....on a mobile device that is.

Curious. Reading the FAQ, it's a service that forum providers can optionally provide to members.

Of course Maurico would need to set things up at the GZ end (assuming of course the GZ forum system/framework is properly supported?).
I'm not sure of the pros and cons of implementing it, or the ongoing cost. But for members with touch capable portable devices it seems like a relatively user-friendly interface.

As a subscriber, it would be nice to have the ability to use it, since ads are disabled for us anyway. Non-subscribers only get the web interface.

Ah, found an earlier thread regarding Tapatalk support for Geekzone. Never mind.

I find that Geekzone doesn't work very well in Safari on iPad, mainly because of strange behaviour when typing text into forum replies/posts.

I really like Dolphin as an iPad browser and try to avoid Safari. Always read GZ via Dolphin and have not come across any typing problems.

Sometimes I just sit and think. Other times I just sit.

You will notice that Geekzone uses very basic web technologies - no AJAX or other script-based technology is needed for using the site (except for the automatic refresh in the feeds in the frontpage or live.geekzone.co.nz). The reason for that is because I believe making it work in all browsers is better than worrying about where it works or not.

You may find some style problems because of how some browser or another render an element, but I've never found something major and certainly not in the main desktop browsers or main mobile browsers.

Back on "app". We do have an API - currently read only. We had a few devs interested in creating apps, but nothing much happened. The only one "out there" is the Windows Phone app.

Until there's interest I won't put much effort into making it R/W. Actually, at this point if we have to make it R/W I think we could just go and implement an interface to the Tapatalk platform...

Now that would be interesting...

I guess the obvious question is how could the work required to make it happen be funded?

I have no clue as to the revenue model employed by a typical open forum (although I gather advertising is one of the primary sources?).

Does Tapatalk support in-app advertising?
Just thinking subscribers would get the benefit of not seeing those ads. It's possibly another way of enticing GZ users to subscribe as well (?) - because you can't adblock the in-app ads, compared to only making the app usable by subscribers (as I was thinking originally).

Just a thought.

I use tapatalk a lot on phone only way I can use forums easily, tried through browsers but not very eay, well I don't find it easy.

I know its been discussed before but I'm interested in what it would take to implement as well and don''t mind the idea of increased sub.

I think Tapatalk only supports standard vBulletin or phpBB forum implementations... Might be wrong?
