I think you read the request wrong,

I think the OP is looking for an existing 5, not a C or S , given that there should be stock in the pipeline it should be possible to still get your hands on a 5,
- It would be odd for a bricks and mortar retailed to have removed the 5 from sale knowing the S and C will be in short supply

We were looking around at the weekend for a phone for my son as an upgrade.  There were a number of retailers who still had an iPhone 5 in stock, mostly the larger sizes so 32 and 64gb.  They were not interested in discounting them however even though they are obsolete.

We will probably get a 5C, lots of places have then for $799.  At that price point it's enough of a difference over the 5S, and the plastic case may be a bit more durable for a younger fella.

It's only available on Vodafone Red?

Telecom haven't done an *official* announcement on their launches yet, but their Twitter feed has announced that there are special events in the main centres:

eg. Wellington: https://twitter.com/TelecomNZ/status/392485780481794048
Auckland: https://twitter.com/TelecomNZ/status/392486361388699649

It is interesting, does this imply the iphone 5s is not being sold outside those cities?

I doubt it. When I bought my iPhone 4S I lined up at the flagship Wellington store on Willis St - Telecom put on a good launch "party" with free Hell's pizza, a DJ, a mojo providing coffee/hot choc all night, and extra staff. I got a phone but not the one I wanted, so went to the other Telecom store on Lambton the day after (first in line!) and was able to get the phone I wanted. Other stores just may have less/limited stock as opposed to the flagship stores, and will likely open as per normal business hours, as opposed to the flagships which usually open at 12:01am on launch day. :)

Just got email from Telecom.

"Thanks for signing up to hear more about the launch of the iPhone 5s and 5c. Not long now. If you're keen to be one of the first to rock the rainbow with 5c or experience the power and performance of the latest 5s, you can sign up for one of our great value 24-month Ultra Mobile plans and get yours online. Sales kick off at 12.01am on 25.10.13. But be quick because stock will be limited."

does that mean I have to sign up to a 24-month plan to be eligible to buy the phone?

I think I read it as to buy online you have to sign up for 24 months, but for in store you don't have to.
Do you think they will offer them for sale on Telecom online at 12:01, or earlier? Could be a better option (especially if they had Saturday delivery)

Assuming the article published this evening on NBR's site is correct, it's interesting to note that the minimum monthly commitment from both carriers is higher than it's been in previous years.
It won't be long before someone crunches the numbers and looks at the cost of buying the phone and then terminating the contract right away, but I fear the carriers have got wise to that trick and it's not economic to do it.
So for those of us who want it off-contract, it looks like we play the waiting game. A rep I talked to from Apple today confirmed the three week minimum wait.

I definitely want to buy outright and I'm not in a big hurry, so I'm thinking that I'll order one on Apple's site on Friday and if big box retailers get stock within that three week period then I'll cancel the order. I'm pretty sure they'll let you do that.

I'm a 2degrees customer and don't really want to buy from a Telecom/Vodafone store even if they are selling them outright, so I'll just wait it out.
