I'm not sure on the retina iPad Mini. Everyone and their dog was expecting a MacBook Air with retina this year and it didn't happen, and won't happen as far as I can see. It's now become Apple's entry level laptop, and what a device it is, none the least of which because of its genuine 10-12 hours of battery life. That wouldn't happen with retina, but it's worked itself into a perfect niche price and spec wise now. I absolutely love my 13" MBA.

IF they can keep the price of the iPad Mini the same with the addition of a retina display AND keep decent battery life I'm sure they'll oblige, but that seems like a huge 'if'. You can have any two features; small\thin design, retina display, battery life, but you can't have all three.

I have an iPad 3 and will trade up only if the iPad 5 is quite a bit lighter, otherwise it'll be 2nd gen iPad Mini with or without retina, and wifey will get the iPad 3.

I don't know if it will be significantly lighter, the battery and display would be most of the weight, and they shouldn't change much.

It will be physically smaller though (bezels will be narrower).

tdgeek:
dickytim: Ipad mini - no retina but finger print scanner and A6X chip

Ipad 5 - smaller bezel, finger print reader, A7X chip and thinner

Both - 8mp camera with a flash.

I have no idea if any of this is right but hey why not have a stab in the dark!

Needs to be good, the Surface 2 Pro looks good.  Cost is similar, power and screen is very good, and you could use it as a lappie, or tablet, or a full Windows or just tablety functions such as movies, reading, mobility, etc. It also will be free of some Apple restrictions. Not trolling as I am an iPad 3 user and getting a 5, but I can see the Surface 2 Pro being multi functional for many. I just had a gander as considering changing my Win 7 laptop to either a MBAir or Win8 laptop, maybe S2P

Not being too picky but the cost of a Surface Pro 2 is a lot more than the iPad. A 64GB Surface Pro 2 is US$899 compared to US$699 for an iPad 4. For the 30% extra you'd expect a lot more.

Yep a bit more, I'd want it to be just line a laptop AND juSt lime an iPad for browsing , ebooks and video. How close it is I have no idea. Like I said never interested in one but it may do better as it's might do both well or it may be ok for both but not ideal

Just so read the launch report. A lightweight ipad called the 'ipad air' and a retina display mini. Nice refresh. Having used a Note 8 for a few months the high resolution mini is looking like a future purchase (good size).

You can still buy an ipad 2 for another year!

Could be worth getting ipad 4 " refurbished" if looking for an ipad.

Apple have delivered on the hardware front but IOS7 on tablets is horrible. The whites in Apps like calendar for example are painful to the eyes and the dock looks horrible. IOS7 looks good on smaller devices like iPhones though.

The new Mini does look good, but it will be priced higher than the current Mini by the looks of it.

Going off USD pricing, the current Mini is $329

It will go down to $299
The New Mini with Retina will be $399
The same price as the iPad2
(All in USD).

That translates to the New iPad Mini being $579 here (same as the iPad2)?
That's a bit less than the Note8 Retail.

So you'll be popping back on tomorrow, after it downloads, to tell us how it looks?

Yikes. Might not have been the best day for my Orcon connection to be switched to Unlimited. I have a feeling there's going to be a lot of concurrent downloading going on today :/

I'm happy with the higher price for the significantly improved device that it is.

What I was surprised at was no touch ID sensor for any iPad. With iCloud Keychain now in play it seems the best\easiest method of securing your device ala iPhone 5S. I hate the idea of having to enter a pass code every time I want to use my iPad, I think most people do, but the alternative is leaving all my logins and credit card info (except the 3 digit code) open to anyone (edit: assuming I use iCloud Keychain, but I would like to...)

I had read various stories about the touch ID sensor being the one component hampering the 5S's production rate so maybe that's why they left it out?
