My wife takes tonnes of photos and videos on her iPhone.

Here's what i'd like to do.

Turn on my PC and then Click an iOS app on the phone and transfer stuff really fast in the background via my wifi router (ie not over the internet which is slow).

Possible?

I'm currently using bittorrent sync. I don't know how the iPhone claims to be able to transfer faster than my line upload speed allows.

But the main problem is the iPhone screen MUST be showing that app. as soon as you open another app on the iPhone it stops. as soon as a notification comes thru it stops. as soon as the screen goes black it stops.

1st world frustration!

Dropbox camera sync can continue uploading in the background.

I don't have enough storage on dropbox.

Plus it goes to cloud. Prefer if it goes into my computer on my wifi.

Probably just as easy to connect to PC via the cable and copy/paste in Windows Explorer

Manual, yes, quick and easy, also yes

just a side note: plugging in the wire is not as handsfree as it sounds

on my wife's iphone 4 i find that it has about 4 folders in camera roll. you need to copy contents of each folder and then hope the phone doesn't freeze (50-50) and come back and check frequently praying that it hasn't frozen. then if it does for some reason sometimes you missed a file here and there (not a big deal as she takes so many anyway!) then you do the same praying for the other folders.

then you have to manually delete those photos or risk re-downloading them again the next time you plug in the wire!
