Hi All,

We have just setup a new MS Exchange 2010 server here at work and everything has been operating great until we setup our email accounts on our and our staffs ios devices. It seems whenever me or my staff delete an email from the inbox lets say it goes to the trash but once I open the trash it simply disappears. I logged into OWA and can see that the deleted items are still sitting in the trash folder on there?

I have also tried one of the recommend fixes of setting days to sync to no limit and I still am having no luck. Also just incase you needed to know, the Exchange server is running the latest service pack, that being SP3!

Thanks in advance!

Cheers,
Jayden

Hi Jayden

Just to confirm - you are deleting emails on the iOS device, the email is going into the iOS device's trash folder, and then disappearing.  But the message is still in the Deleted folder on the Exchange server as evidenced by checking OWA.

I've never seen this behaviour.  I can see numerous items in the Trash on my iPhone when I switch to looking at that folder.

How are you connecting the iOS devices to the mailbox?  IMAP?  ActiveSync?

Cheers
Mike

Hi Mike,

Yes that's correct, Running off active sync as we have disabled IMAP.

I have also noticed when I deleted some items from the inbox on my workstation on outlook it goes to the trash but when I check my phone or ipad it shows them as still in the inbox? Possibly because I didn't give it time to update the folders in outlook?

Cheers,
Jayden

Hmmm... we look after numerous sites running ActiveSync from Exchange 2003 to Exchange 2013 and I've never seen that behaviour - as long as you have a 'good' connection on the Activesync server.  DNS or routing issues can cause a little temporary trouble if you are roaming between an internal WiFI connection and an external 3G or out-of-office WiFi connection.

Equally strange is your mention of deleting items in Outlook from the Inbox not causing the item to go into the Deleted folder.  Under that scenario, (assuming you are using Cached mode) Outlook moves the email from the Inbox to the Deleted folder, and instructs Exchange to do the same.  This means there is zero delay - you should be able to see the Deleted item in that folder immediately.

What happens if you login to OWA and delete an item from the Inbox?  Does it go straight to the Deleted folder?  Can you see the change in Outlook within 60 seconds (maximum) i.e. the item disappearing from the Inbox and appearing in the Deleted folder?

Are Sent items syncing correctly?  If you send a message from Outlook and send one from an iOS device, do the messages both appear in OWA's Sent folder?  And the Outlook Sent Folder?  And the iOS Sent Folder?

Cheers
Mike

Could this be brought on by having the 'keep deleted items for (days): set to 0 under Organisation config > Mailbox > database management on your exchange server ?

Hi All,

Thanks for your responses. I think I have figured out what the "problem" was!
With regards to the emails being deleted on the workstation and not showing up as deleted on my iPad, well I believe this is due to the fact that we use the cached option on outlook and I only just realized but it only updates it every 15 seconds! So it was my impatience and what I had been doing was quitting out of outlook before letting it push the changes back onto the server. I tried it again this time without cached mode and the changes happened instantly, I then turned cached mode back on and waited 15 seconds or so later after deleting the message and sure enough it worked fine.

Then with regards the emails some what deleting themselves from the trash box on my iPad I cant seem to see what the issue is but I believe it is just a iOS7 issue, as I tried it on my iPhone and sure enough it worked fine on there with no issues.

Thanks guys for your advice.

Cheers,
Jayden
