lduncan: So as of this morning fw version 1.1.1 for both the iPod Touch, and the iPhone has now publicly been jailbroken, using an exploit in TIFF image handling.

http://www.toc2rta.com/

This means 3rd party apps can be installed again on the iPhone, and now on the iPod Touch.

Those lucky enough to have purchased a TurboSIM, will also be able to use the iPhone as a phone :-). Those who have used anySIM or iUnlock, are SOL for now (The situation doesn't look too rosy for them either, seems as though the baseband nvram is FUBAR for now).

Oh yeah, only those stupid people who upgraded their phones to 1.1.1 can't use their iPhone as phone. Not much in 1.1.1 anyway. :D

The ability to adjust the volume and the turn on/off for automatic network connections are probably the best features in 1.1.1 and quite helpful.

Well well well, the downgrade for baseband is now possible. Good one. Happy days all over again for those who accidentally :) updated their iPhones and ended up having a shiny paperweight.

Looks like the time lag between new firmware and a complete unlock is shrinking. Good news...

IPSF already claim to be able to unlock FW 1.1.1 and update the baseband to people who upgraded from FW 1.0.1. They even thank the Dev Team for the jailbreak solution.Surprised Anyway according to Dev Team free unlock solution to FW 1.1.1 should be available soon.

Yip, they have the secpac needed for writing the 1.1.1 bb now.

Hopefully they do the free one properly this time ;-)

IPSF is the technically better softunlock solution (some believe it's been done with info from inside Apple, as they appear to be generating valid nck's)

Looking at the anySIM 1.1 beta released briefly yesterday via rapidshare, they appear to still be using the flawed patching method which resulted in bricked phones!!

According to http://www.tuaw.com/2007/10/16/iphone-dev-team-announces-free-unlock/ there is now a free unlock for 1.1.1 virgin (never unlocked) iphones. They are still working on a "virginizer" for previously unlocked or bricked phones. The cat and mouse game takes another turn.

I haven't seen anything in 1.1.1 that would compel me to bother updating from my unlocked 1.0.2 phone.

I'd be wary of it until I see some source code. The last anysim version clobbered the bb. As did the beta release of this 1.1 update, i'm surprised they haven't updated the version number to 1.2 if they have fixed those major bugs.

Well Apple have done the inevitable, and are going to release an official iPhone SDK for native apps in February:

Good news.

They've also been told by the French government that they have to release an unlocked iPhone in France, ;)

But they haven't said how much this unlocked phone will be either ;-)

Definitely more worth it than some rip-off TurboSIM that risks being unusable with every firmware update. Granted, it works with this update (1.1.1) but there is virtually no guarantee it will work with future updates.

So I'm thinking about getting my mate to send me an iphone from the Apple store in the states...

most likely version 1.1.1..?

my options are anysim or turbosim?

What is the safest or easiest method in your guys opinion... plus costs involved?

I''m running vista also....
