Pioneer have started rolling out their CarPlay firmware updates!

Snippet from their Facebook page:

Thank you for your continued patience and support. We have been working to ensure that integration and quality meet both Pioneer and Apple CarPlay standards and specifications.

Today, Pioneer is proud to become one of the first aftermarket manufacturers to support Apple CarPlay™ with the official release of a firmware update compatible with five 2014 NEX in-dash multimedia receivers and the introduction of the CarPlay compatible fourth generation AppRadio (SPH-DA120).

Here in the U.S. market, the five Pioneer 2014 NEX models will be Apple CarPlay compatible via a firmware update available free of charge here, www.pioneerelectronics.com/firmware. The AppRadio 4 is being released today and will be available at authorized Pioneer Car Electronics dealers nationwide, including Best Buy, Crutchfield and Car Toys.

We are excited to offer the Apple CarPlay experience to our customers, in the vehicles they already own.

To download the free CarPlay firmware, visit www.pioneerelectronics.com/firmware

Typical. I just had a DEH-X9650BT installed last weekend so I wouldn't have to wait for this. :/

Updated my head unit today from the Pioneer AU website and everything works great.

One thing that is a little annoying is the need to unlock the phone when connecting (Enter Pin or TouchID), A prompt does display on the head unit telling you to do this.

One good feature over Pioneers version of CarPlay being their AppRadio software is I can still listen to the FM radio while CarPlay is displayed on screen which I wasn't able to do previously with AppRadio Live.

However the best feature for me at least is being able to use Spotify from my head unit! See all my offline music playlists, manipulate Spotify without the need to ever touch the iPhone.

Maps works well but still unable to set a route with Siri in NZ at present, Still prefer Google Maps but no CarPlay support.

I don't have steering wheel controls in my car but Siri can still easily be launched to do things for you by simply saying "Hey Siri" or alternatively holding the iOS style Home button on screen.

Tested with iPhone 5 on 8.0.2 and iPhone 6 on 8.1 (beta)
