Hi - wife has got an i-phone 4 and we've transferred all her data over from her old 3s phone
However, when she sends texts to 1 friend apparently they come up on friends phone as if they have come from an e-mail address and not wifes mobile number..... this only happens with this 1 friend and only at home - she has txt this friend from her work and the texts are ok.
anyone know why this is happening?

Is the friends phone also an iphone?

Could this be an iMessage thing by using the friends email as the reference? IMessage only kicked in with the iPhone 4 AFAIK so might just be using data to send the messages between them like that?

not sure about friends phone, but wife gets txts from this friend and they come up being from xxxxx as normal, but when wife sends txt to her friend from our home they come on friends phone as being from our e-mail address and not from my wifes name - it's weird really?!?!

Hi - possibly down to message settings (a device can have multiple 'sent from' options). As suggested, when going iPhone to iPhone a message can use Apple's iMessage portal and the sending device can be identified with a phone number or email address. Look at Settings > Messages > Send & Receive to see what is listed and what is selected.

Cheers,
Mike
