Apple have just launched a refreshed iPod Touch with the same form factor as the previous model, but with vastly improved internals.

For those that like the idea of a separate media device and phone, this is great news.

Mac Rumors article on iPod Touch performance

From the look of the articles floating about on the various Apple following sites, it's a good device that almost meets the iPhone performance, which means great graphics, speed and gaming experiences, while not losing the classic iPod Touch form factor.

The question, I guess, is does it interest people anymore?

Can't believe they still have a 16 gb one. 32 gb is really needed as minimum these days. It is also to expensive. I may be interested I'd the screen was bigger, but it looks like a cheap way to upgrade. The big problem with the iPod touch is poor battery life, so I would prefer it to be slightly thicker for a bigger battery

Bring back the classic or provide a cheap touch with 128GB and without all the extra stuff like cameras and gaming.

I want something that I can load all the music on for use in my car mostly.

The issue with that is it's contrary to Apple's supposed future state where everything lives on their servers and we happily exist with the cloud providing us with our every need.

I like to have the physical media on my device too, hence my 6000+ songs sitting on both my iPhone and iPad.

I think the biggest impediment to people upgrading to this model will be the lack of Apple Pay - whilst not yet relevant here, it's a big potential gate opener for those without the need or means for a telco contract that inevitably comes with an iPhone.

I could be tempted to get one for my son, given at seven so he's too young to need a phone. But that said it'll be cheaper to buy a SD card and a good-value phone like the Vodafone Smart Prime, Moto G, or even that new $300 Vodafone mobile and just not stick in a sim card. Not sure I'd pay all that additional amount to enter the hallowed halls of iOS, especially since my son would probably drop it in the bath a day after getting it...

Mr 5 has a second hand 5th gen touch, has his own iCloud account (setup with family sharing) and can FaceTime us or his grandparents, and send us iMessages when he is at home.
I would be interested in the new one if they weren't so expensive!

I agree, and I think the ipad mini 2 represents better value , for what you get than the touch. But sometimes they do heavily discount the iPod. The cheapest I have seen it is 180 dollars

What surprises me is that they don't appear to have included touch ID on it, which is a big oversight if this is supposed to be a new gen product. To me it is more like putting lipstick on a pig. Maybe they will be bringing out a bigger model in the future, or maybe this is the last update, as I see that apple have remove the iPod category from their website.

Both of my kids (8 & 10) have iOS devices with iCloud/iMessage etc and also use them for the same purpose - chatting to the grandparents in another city, sending me random messages when I am at work (Dad, can you please...)

They also obviously use them for games and internet usage etc.

I'd be keen on one of these for my youngest once they are around long enough to turn up in the refurb store.

You have hit the nail on the head, the price. Nearly $700 for the 128gb version is a huge price considering flash memory has dropped considerably. They are likely making huge margins on those, and no wonder they don't want people to be able to put their own sd cards in them. I mean you can buy a 128gb memory stick for less than $70.
I use the ipod 5th generation, and it has always been laggy since I got it because it was using 3-4 year old technology , when I got it last year. But they were selling them off for $180, so was a good buy for ios testing. But I wouldn't pay much more for the new version, and it would need to be the 32GB version, considering the size of ios, and the size that apps now are.
