Hi guys. Just got an Apple TV 3 (I know... couldn't afford the 4). Mostly using it for the Ondemand apps. The problem is the TVNZ app will stop playing if I lock the screen or switch apps. Is that normal behaviour? The 3now app lets me still use other apps on the iPad without affecting the stream. I'm on the most recent ioS 10 version using an iPad Air 2.

I think it depends on the developers implementation for air play.  Yours sounds like its the mirroring style, which means it's being driven from the device.  The better way to do it, it a handoff from device to apple tv, which means the apple tv picks up the stream and is independent from the device.

Yep, this is "normal" for the app as it currently stands - at least we now get to Airplay from the TVNZ app, which was only introduced a few months back.

It was the same for the initial Lightbox app; it's frustrating one can't close the lid of the case or use the iPad for other purposes while watching using such a limited app, but hopefully this is something TVNZ will address soon.

And don't worry about having purchased an ATV3 rather than the 4; I think it still offers good value for money, especially given it can be picked up second-hand for well under $100. Combined with an iOS device (for Airplaying content not available natively on the ATV) it offers a fairly comprehensive entertainment package. We'd always use this for Netflix, for example, rather than bothering to use our TV's built-in app.
