People are tending to sell their old iOS device for a new one. So when you do that, how to make sure the data on the device not being seen by the next owner? I am not sure a factory reset is enough or not. What is your opinion on this?

iOS Devices that have secure enclave (since iPhone 5S), are encrypted. When you reset to factory it pulls the encryption key. So a factory reset is a safe way to blank your phone before selling.

I also make sure to follow this guide from Apple: https://support.apple.com/HT201351

The next owner will appreciate if your log out of iCloud & disable "Find my iPhone" before resetting the device.

But when I searched in Google, a bunch of programs claims they are able to recover formatted data from iPhone.

So if i didn't log out iCloud, then the phone would still be under my control even sold to someone else, right?

The same bunch of programs also claim to bypass icloud lock and install an array of bloat ware on your computer and usually have a RAT encrypted into them and act as a "Trojan Horse"

If someone wants to do that to themselves, So be it.

Nope, they will not be able to set up the device. It will complain that the device is still registered to another user. If they don't know the previous user, then it becomes an expensive door stop. Search for "icloud lockout".

If you want to be really paranoid, just fill the whole device with songs couple of times.
