A bit of suprise for a Wed morning

Apple releases new iPads via press release

The iPad Air 2 is replaced by a new model simply called the iPad. It retains a 9.7-inch (24.6cm) screen, but the display is brighter and the processor faster. Its price starts at US$329 (NZ$467) for 32GB of storage, down from US$399 (NZ$566). The standard-size iPad is now cheaper than the smaller Mini model.

The 7.9-inch (20cm) iPad Mini 4 now comes with 128GB of storage starting at US$399, rather than US$499 (NZ$708) before. Apple is eliminating the 32GB model. Nothing else is changing.

Apple is also releasing a red edition of the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus; for each phone sold, Apple is donating an unspecified amount to HIV and AIDS programmes. And Apple is doubling the storage on the smaller iPhone SE while keeping the US$399 starting price

The "new" iPad is thicker and heavier than the iPad Air 2 it's replacing, hopefully it means better battery life.

They are quoting 10 hours battery life (for normal use, over WiFi, not LTE).

That is the same as the Air2. This one has a faster CPU, which I'm assuming uses more power - therefore the bigger battery. It is also heavier than the Air2 (because of said bigger battery).

I am tempted. My 'iPad with Retina Display' - or iPad3 is getting a little long in the tooth, but still works fine for the most part.

The new "ipad" (thanks for giving it a Google-friendly name, idiots) loses the fully laminated display. I would sooner have purchased an Air 2 for $100 more, and now I'm regretting not having done so (kept vacillating between that and the Pro).

I also notice that in re-releasing the iPhone SE, they've increased the price of the big model to $950 instead of just increasing the storage.

Noels etc still have ipad air 2's etc.  You might want to make up your mind sooner rather than later.

Apparently the screen also may not be laminated which potentially means or could be like older modals where the screen isn't as close to the glass. I think it is an odd move to make a device larger and heavier with the same screen size and guessing they were doing it for cost reasons so they can reduce the price on it. The other is thing is that the iPad mini is now more expensive than the iPad.

Is using an older chip so likely won't continue to get iOS updates for as long

I wasn't that much of a secret because the iPad and iPhone was predicted, and what was released matched almost exactly. The Red phone was known about already.

Tried to buy an Air 2 from NL last week and two different branches told me they had none anywhere in NZ. Same story at JB. Harvey Norman online were showing various other iPad models as available but not Air 2.

The other thing is that the 9.6  ipad pro they released last year is the replacement for the ipad air 2. This is just a lower cost ipad , for that bottom market segment, that will also cope with future ios versions, which the ipad air 2 was previously filling, but the A8 chip in it was getting too old.

The 64GB was originally $949 anyway until it dropped a few months back to $849 - probably to help sell through the units that were already in existence before the 32/128GB announcement.

Is the 9.7 Pro going to be refreshed any time soon. mattwnz makes a good point about longevity in terms of ongoing updates. The Air 2 is a few years old at this point. What's the typical support time-frame for iOS devices, 5 years?
