I have an iPhone 6 running latest iOS.

In the last week or so this problem has come up. Never experienced it before, and definitely haven't made any changes to the phone that would have caused it.

Every time I type anything on the keyboard, the whole phone freezes up. Not permanently, just for 5-10 seconds, and then it finally comes back and displays the last character typed. While it's frozen, it's still recognising taps - if I keep typing when frozen, all of those characters will display as soon as it unfreezes 5-10 seconds later.

Also, if I use dictation, it works until the part where it actually needs to display the text on screen, at which stage is freezes up as normal and does not write what I spoke for the 10 delay.

The phone is nearly unusable in this state as it takes many minutes to compose even the simplest of messages.

What I've tried so far to fix it:

1. Update to latest iOS and hard restart. No effect.

2. Disable "predictive" and "check spelling" and then hard restart. Possibly minor improvement but still essentially the same - maybe a few seconds shorter freeze? Hard to tell, still sucky. Even if it did fix it though, it's not a permanent solution if I need those features.

3. "Reset keyboard dictionary" and then hard restart. No improvement.

After a hard restart, I often think it's fixed because it appears to work fine the first time I test it. But then when I go back to type anything again, it's back to its old unusable self. Seems like a hard restart fixes it for about 30 seconds.

Any advice on what to try next to fix this issue? And any idea on what's caused it?

Have you force closed all the background apps? Sometimes a background app (especially games) can 'suck up all the RAM' and cause issues like you're having. Alternately, visit your 'background app refresh' settings and see if everything there 'needs' refreshing. Facebook app is a known culprit for resource hogging, perhaps try deleting and restoring (if you must ๐Ÿ™„) that too...

*edit ๐Ÿ˜ณ Just checked my own background app refresh, 72 apps were on refresh, only 4 needed it! Time to do some housekeeping for me too ๐Ÿคฆ๐Ÿผโ€โ™‚๏ธ

Thanks for the reply.

I tried closing background apps and adjusting background app refresh settings, and I thought it worked at first. Got about 10 words in of smooth typing but now it's back to being useless very quickly.

What else can I try. This is getting so frustrating! Nothing seems to work.

Does it happen with other keyboards, such as Google GBoard? I don't use the native keyboard myself, I just use gboard as it is swipe.

Otherwise it could be a case of a fresh reinstall, which isn't always a bad thing, as something  could also be causing other problems. I would also try disabling all background apps and locations etc.

From a search on the web it looks like it is a known issue and the only solution that you haven't tried seems to be installing another keyboard such as SwiftKey. See if that helps.

What about doing a backup and then put it into recovery mode and restore via iTunes?

CYaBro: What about doing a backup and then put it into recovery mode and restore via iTunes?

I am with CYaBro. When you have some really strange problems, sometimes the only option is to a complete reset and then a restore of user data via iTune. This last resort method worked for me in the past. Look up Google on how to reset and restore from iTune. It important to backup your user data via iTune first before you go down this path.

Just installed gboard, and so far so good. Haven't yet experienced the freeze with that one.

If that means I can never use the native keyboard again I can live with that, but in case I do need to use it, any ideas on how I can get it functioning?

Oh sorry I replied before seeing the other messages. I guess I'll try a full backup and restore from iTunes if nothing else works.

The native one will still appear when you type in passwords.

Well after a short time of use even Gboard starting slowing up in the same way. So I've backed up, wiped, and restored the phone in hopes that it solves it. Fingers crossed!

Well sh*t. Fresh after the phone restore and I'm straight back to having the same problem. Right back where I started!

Any more ideas?

Do you have a screen protector that could be interfering with things?

How so? I don't understand how a screen protector could affect this. I have a thin glass screen protector. Key taps are being received fine - it's just the entire OS freezes up with nearly every one.

OK try a restore again but this time set it up as a new iPhone and don't restore your backup.
Use it like that for a bit and see how it goes.

It could be something in your data / apps that is causing it.
