On paper it looks good but I'm just not sure the processor has chops enough for Photoshop, Lightroom etc. So I want to read some reviews first as it's not much cheaper than a MBP now.

If I were in your position I would just go for the MBP. Is there any particular reason why you're favouring the Air?

Saves $500 or so depending on spec and it weighs a bit less and looks good. Apart from that, you are probably correct. I think Apple ought to have had a quad core chip option. You may have only got 10 hours instead of 12 from the battery but so what? I suppose they figured they would cannibalise MBP sales if they did that!

The Air is not designed to be a photoshop workhorse. Thats what the Pro line is for.  It's an ultra low power processor, it doesn't even have a fan. I'd get the right tool for the job personally.

Indeed - this is why I was surprised that they came out with a new Air at all - I thought they would've just dispensed with it and offered up the iPad Pro as the alternative, as they are touting as being better/faster/lighter than comparably priced portable PC's

The Air has been their most successful Mac.  If anything I'd anticipate a consolidation of the MacBook / MacBook Air into a single SKU over the coming years.  But definitely not a deprecation.

Ah, well. I do not need it to be a workhorse - there is a 5k i7 iMac with 32Gb of RAM on my desk for that.

What I need it for (whatever it is - Air, MBP etc) is to transfer RAW files from cameras to backup drives and for on the road editing before I get home, as well as being the mobile office whilst on the road, of course.

So it won't be replacing anything and, to be honest, in between trips I find that whatever portable option I have barely gets turned on from one week to the next.

But the iPP does not run proper versions of PS or LR. Only App versions which are nowhere near as good. I'd have canned the iPad altogether and made the Air more powerful with a detachable touch screen.

Just got a shipping notification from apple that my new iPad has been shipped. On track for delivery tomorrow morning.

Ditto.

Ditto your ditto.

DHL tracking had mine leaving their Sydney facility at 9:30 pm local time. According to Flightradar24, there’s a DHL B767 that left Sydney at 11 pm, due Auckland 3:30 am.

I can imagine all the Apple products sitting in the departure gate lounge, waiting to board their flight. The announcement goes out “DHL Freight flight to Auckland is now boarding. At this time we’d welcome all our premium customers and frequent fliers to board immediately”. So the 15” MacBook Pro’s and the 12” iPad Pros are allowed to board first. Followed later by the smaller and/or cheaper models. Finally the cases, covers, cables and dongles get to board and take their seats at the rear of the plane - where they all start looking for the USB outlet in the back of the seat in front of them.

You should look at the Photoshop demo from the event. Looks like the new iPad Pro will have a full fledge Photoshop in not too long.

The Air is popular in business for mobile workers after a "sexy" laptop, from what i've seen too.

Maybe in its early days.  There's plenty of "sexy" options out there these days.  Most of which took their lead from the MBA.

eracode: I ordered a 256 iPad Pro 11” direct from Apple within the first couple of hours last Wed morning and allegedly it’s due to be delivered this Wednesday. Does anyone know where they are shipped from? Have not yet received the confirmation that it’s on it’s way.

I ordered the Apple iPad Smart Folio case/cover last Fri and it arrived here (Auckland) today from Sydney.

If the iPad is coming from Sydney, it’s now unlikely to be here Wed. However if it’s coming from within NZ, I guess it might get here Wed.

My experience with the 15+ things I've ordered from Apple is that they ship out from NSW around 4-8pm the night before they arrive at my office in Auckland.

So I wouldn't give up hope until after 9pm tomorrow (Tuesday) night!

You were absolutely correct - as was @wellygary on this point. The iPad left Sydney about 9 pm local time last night and was delivered to home on Auckland North Shore at 10:15 am this morning. Direct wireless set-up from the old iPad was a breeze and took about 30 mins - now using it to do this. What a beautiful piece of kit.

iPad Pro 12.9 has arrived and is restoring now. love the hardware, so sleek compared to my 2017 version.

I'm really rather jealous, but also feeling quite pleased with myself that I have approximately $2k less debt to worry about, through being unusually restrained in my tech purchasing...but I really, really want one.

One annoying thing with the new iPad Pro: With the iOS 12 update, Apple swapped the positions of the emoji and numbers keys on the virtual keyboard. After an outrage, they changed back to original positions in iOS 12.1.

Now the new iPad has 12.1 on it - but the two keys are now again in the ‘wrong’ positions with no way to get them back to original ‘correct’ positions. I suppose I’ll get used to it but bloody annoying in the meantime.

I'm in the exact boat, haha!

Definitely using all my willpower to not hit that "Buy" button on the Apple website. Hopefully this continues when/if I see one in-store…

Apart from the on-the-road editing - would it not be an idea to check out dedicated camera backup drives? I know nothing about them, apart from they exist.

I use my iPad 9.7 for mobile office with a Microsoft Universal Mobile keyboard as I use office 365.
