G'day

I have a couple of mail accounts

.mac & work account through exchange, xtra is ISP.

.mac account - sends mail from iPhone using either 3G or wifi, whichever is available.
work account - sends mail from iPhone using wifi but fails when trying to use 3G network. Error is something about recipient email address being bad, which is crap b/c it works when using address and wifi, Strange!

smtp for work is smtp.xtra.co.nz (nothing special)

Strikes me as a VF back end issue? is that right?

Try send.xtra.co.nz, but you will need to change a few settings also.

Hmm, not working ? 

Still comes up with an invalid address error.


I changed the port settings on the iPhone, but will I need the server port settings changed also?

We are using a domain name, but isn't that for incoming and not out going email. I thought it was just a simple thing to use smtp.xtra.co.nz if that is what we use normally at work.

Thing is, does VF allow using smtp.xtra.co.nz through its 3G network? or should I be using something else like a VF smtp address?

Vodafone does not block access to external smtp servers. It is all in your configuration.

Telecom Xtra server may require authentication or use of the correct server. If you are using from the office on a Telecom connection then things "just" work - otherwise you will have to go through their help pages, or search here (Google is your friend) for some old discussions back in April where people talked about using smtp.xtra.co.nz or send.xtra.co.nz depending on the network you want.

You might have to enable authentication, and if you are not using an @xtra.co.nz email address then you have to "authorise" it too.

smtp2.vodafone.net.nz is the correct smtp server for Vodafone NZ

If you are sending mail from a @xtra.co.nz account you should be using the following:
pop3: pop3.xtra.co.nz, SSL,port 995
smtp: send.xtra.co.nz, SSL, with SMTP auth, port 465

If your client doesn't do proper SSL, then use the 110 port without SSL, and 587 without SSL but WITH auth.

You'll find that smtp.xtra.co.nz may work if you are connecting from a telecom provided connection (dial up, fixed line broadband, mobile broadband etc), except you must authenticate if you are connecting from a different network.

If you are using a domain name mail service provided by Xtra/Telecom called officemail. (ie. bob@example.borg.nz (email address made up)) You'll need to use the following settings:
pop3: pop3.officemail.co.nz, SSL,port 995
smtp: smtp.officemail.co.nz, SSL, with SMTP auth, port 465

The same rules apply with non SSL connection.

If you are using a domain name not provided by Xtra/Telecom, you'll need to use your own mail settings. smtp.xtra.co.nz will only work if you are connecting from a telecom connection. In this case, the vodafone smtp server could be an option, or alternatively use your own smtp server (with authetication of course, you don't want open relays on the internet).

  For outgoing mail using a vodafone device refer to johnrs answer. All vodafone mail-capable handsets must use the vodafone out pathway to send.

 Hi,
      The settings are standard on any 3G Vodafone device.  The default settings on your iphone will be correct at time of purchase. But, if you go to the site map at the vodafone site, search for settings, you will find all the settings are there. Doesn't have to be for your phone, they are all the same.
