Is there a list of special software somewhere that is so amazing and unavailable through the app store?

Because if there is, I'd like to see it please.

Other than that, what else is the point to jailbreak your new 3G iPhone?

Just curious really.

Indeed there is a wealth of development happening for the iPhone that is not going to end up in the App Store.  Jailbreaking your iPhone 3G will allow you to install those unsigned applications alongside your signed Apple apps.  Cydia is the name of the installer package, which works in the same way as apt-get on linux.  Since I've been using Cydia (about a week now), the number of apps has grown steadily.

There's not much rubbish in there to be honest, there's a lot of interface change tools (modify your carrier name to whatever you want, modify certain icons and symbols on the phone), but also tools like BossPrefs which showed up yesterday - this gives you access to important tools like turning SSH on and off, turning GPRS/3G Data on and off....essentially it'll let you turn most things on and off from the gui.

There's a bunch of valid reasons to jailbreak, but if you're not a power user (ie the sort of person that NEEDS to get into the back end of your iphone) or you don't care if your data is on at all times then it may not be for you.  Just be aware that there's a big community of developers out there that are going to build apps for jailbroken phones, and you could potentially miss out on some very cool stuff.

Roger that, I can see the sense in being able to stop a data connecting while roaming overseas for instance if you didn't need it. That might save alot of money! :-)

Interesting, I would like to look at some of the software out there.

Oh I know what you mean, I have itchy fingers syndrome for sure...

Thing is though, I also like "optimum performance/ease of use (real world) and a groovy interface. The standard iPhone gives on a level.

I guess, anything that can add to my task/diary sync function, video cam, cut & paste I'd look at, just wish I didn't have to hack the thing to do it.

Do you think we're all A.D.H.D?  :-)  Constant fiddling :-)
