It's a full restore image thats why its 250MB

iPhone1,2 (3G iPhone) direct link
iPhone1,1 (1st Gen) direct link

Also available for iPod Touch 2.0 users (via iTunes store only as its protected content)

I have just finished installing it on my 3G iPhone - runs a lot smoother, address book doesnt lag nor does SMS. User input is also faster.. but well see what happens in a couple of hours :P

I wonders if it fixed the odd Contacts problem I have encountered...

I uses Exchange ActiveSync to sync my contacts, so it has 2 contact directories. Depend on which directory I'm in, the next time I'm on it, it will display "All Contacts" when in fact it is on one of the two directory... really weird!

Doesn't this update come with some GPS improvements? That's what I had heard.

I believe the next major update (2.1) will have enhanced GPS functions, this is simply a bug fix - which was needed!

Aaah. I just mixed 2.0.1 with 2.1.
Damn, unless they jump from something like 2.0.3 to 2.1 it's going to be one hell of a wait. :-(

I have found a link to some user found inprovements: http://tinyurl.com/6pc7tb

All of us 1Gen owners are of course stuck waiting for a word from the dev team. I must say the more I used the 2.0 I felt it was pretty buggy.

Anyway, Appleinsider reports (http://www.appleinsider.com/articles/08/08/04/apple_releases_iphone_2_0_1_software_update.html) -

Apple does not always specify the changes it makes in minor software updates. As such, the company leaves users guessing and trying to decipher those changes on their own. Some user-discovered changes in iPhone/iPod 2.0.1 include:

-You can now drag an app icon across multiple pages in one motion, rather than having to drag it, drop it, pick it up again and drag it over to next page, and repeat.
-Contacts are now more responsive.
-After installing 2.0.1, each successive backup is much faster.
-Apple may have changed the calibration of the iPhone's reception "bars" while connected to a 3G network to reflect a stronger signal than before.
-Keypad loads quicker.
-Screen rotation in Safari appears to be smoother.
-Some apps may ask to be updated after the firmware upgrade.

After update, iTunes prompts me to update the carrier settings.. which fails

"iTunes could not update the carrier settings on your iPhone. An unknown error has occurred (0xE8000001)"

Seems to be happening to our friends in Aussie as well

Ok i've got the update installed. It seems that the 'faster backup' thing isn't caused by the update, as was reported by some people. I actually found that I had to run two backups before the phone would update it's firmware. After the first one taking over 1:30 i was a bit annoyed.
However, I was pleased to see the second backup go in under 10 minutes.

This gives me reason to believe that the only slow backup is the first one that you allow to happen.

Certainly is a lot zippier, especially switching between apps and loading the contacts list.
Safari still crashes on complex pages.
Also received the carrier error (std iPhone not pwned)
