Well I have now tested this on 2 different phones and will post up what I have found (both phones 2g).

Both phones had no problems at all, both phones had custom 2.0 firmware on them.

1st phone had basic settings but no apps or music on it, upgrade time was about 20 mins because of the dumb backup thing.
2nd phone I have just finished (my real phone) took about an hour to upgrade (because of the backup thing), I also had on this phone jailbreak software.

Once the update had finished on the 2nd phone all my jailbreak software had gone however I did not have to "unlock it" to work on vodafone again and all setting and info are still on the device.

I did have to reinstall my APN from unlockit.co.nz as I was using a 3rd party jailbreak app to do my APN.

Over all very easy, just plugged the iphone into itunes, say yes to the update and go and have a coffee.

DO NOT DO THIS IF YOU HAVE CUSTOM 2.0 ON YOUR 3G

Quick review 2.0.1

Ok have had 2.0.1 on the phone for about an 30 - 40 mins and its a lot faster than it was before,

Unlocking from 5 secs to about 3 secs
Contact went from 5 - 7 secs (sync to mobileme) down to about 3 secs
"My settings" area use to be a killer and had to wait about 10 secs, now its down to 3
Text messages are still a bit slow pulling up but nothing like it use to be, takes about 2 or 3 secs now (before it was 8)
Typing keeps up with me, no waiting for the keys to jump up, I use to be able to finish words before it would write them, still a little slow but 80% better than it was.

Yes both 1st Gen phones were running pwnage custom firmware 2.0

All I did was plug it into itunes are did the update via itunes, (itunes will tell you there is a update, click yes).

It will then backup the phone and install the new firmware, once its finished all you data is still there and the phone is still unlocked.

I did not do a "restore" I did an update and as there was no change to the baseband then unlocking was not needed again. :)

However the Jailbreak software and jailbreak app's will not be there after the update and you will only be able to use the apps from the apps store.

sorry guys I dont get it... so if you have jailbroken to 2.0 you can run the 2.0.1 udate that pops up on itunes and it wont brick your phone?

I read today on engadget that it bricks your phone?

Hi

That is right if you run the update from itunes on a jailbreak 2G 2.0 then you lose your jailbreak and jailbreak software but keep the unlocked status and can still use your phone.

Cheers

p.s. if you have boss prefs installed make sure you turn on wifi and edge before the update otherwise wifi and edge may not work after the update

I too have updated a Pwned iPhone w/ v2.0 of the OS to v2.0.1 via the iTunes update.

It retains the unlock (I am using a vodafone prepay sim) from which we can conclude that the 2.0.1 firmware update does not include a baseband firmware update. I do have one error. Each time I plug the phone in via USB now, iTunes prompts me that there is a "carrier settings update" available. However, if I choose to have iTunes install this, it fails with an error. This doesn't seem to affect operation of any other aspect of the phone.

However, it does overwrite the remainder of the firmware, so as others have pointed out, you'll lose any jailbreak installed.

I haven't yet tested whether a downgrade to v2.0 (via PwnageTool v2) is possible, but it should be.

It might be worth looking at the field test data. You can see PDP and GPRS debug info, and you can see if things look OK.

To access these, go to the keypad of the iPhone's Phone application, key in "*3001#12345#*" and then press call.

Have fun.

Upgrade 2 phones to 2.0.1 with pwnage. All good. Reception just as crappy as with 2.0. Weirdly; both phones offered the carrier update, one got an error one not. Not that any difference can be detected. Anecdotaly, I found that increasing the root partition from 512MB to 768MB has speeded up responsivness between two allegedly identical 2Gs. Can anyone confirm?
