Officially now on the Apple site. Order 6th December. Delivers 13th December.

I'm guessing Spark will be the carrier but there could be others.

I'm more of a Get Smart fan than Dick Tracy. Does anyone know if Apple are planning a (possibly Nike co-branded) cellular shoe phone any time soon?

I'm just looking forward to Apple selling the cellular-only Stainless Steel AW, which will give me the ability to go back to steel after having a moderately inferior Aluminium one...

This is great news, I picked up a series 4 stainless steel with cellular by chance a couple of weeks ago!

Only thing is I recently switched from Spark on account to prepaid for better value... For $20/4 weeks I'll soon be getting 2.45GB of data (due to data stack). I'd have to switch to the $39 plan and pay for the One Number add-on.

All up would cost an extra $33 a month and I'd get half as much data :/

Spark is the launch carrier. It's on Apple's website. I believe JB Hi-Fi will also be retailing them.

I've been looking forward to this but...I hope another carrier joins the party soon.

It's been a while since I checked Spark's offerings and I'm surprised by how limited and uncompetitive they are.

My wife and I have a good deal from Vodafone where we share a pool of data and have data SIMs for our laptops and iPads that also tap into that bucket of data. It's exactly what we want and although Vodafone gets a lot wrong, in our case they built us a plan that works well for our use case.

When I explained to Spark what we had and asked if they could come close to a match, after lots of being put on hold they said we'd be best going to their "unlimited" plan with the hotspot add-on. We paid a premium for devices with cellular for a reason. And we are again prepared to pay a premium for the cellular Watch, so it was always unlikely we would find this option acceptable. It seems the Spark reps just aren't equipped to create a bundle that suits a specific customer need.

So we'll hang on a little longer in the hope that 2D or Voda come to the party.

We'll just have to cancel your Christmas leave @SaltyNZ

Unfortunately the cellular part relies on eSIM, and we are not yet ready to make any sort of public comment in regards to eSIM support.

Excellent, looks like Apple will be selling the Aussie models here (A2157 for Series 5).

Took a punt and bought a GPS + Cellular in Brisbane on launch, glad it worked out :)

Order 6.12. Available 13.12”

I had the same idea with their sale, but will be conveniently finished by the time you can place an order

Actually not. The device is usually country-locked to carriers available in the country it was purchased, so it will still not support and carriers other than Telstra, Optus, and Vodafone. Sorry.

From the Spark website: If I bought my Apple Watch overseas, will it work in NZ?

Spark NZ supports Apple Watch Series 3, 4 and 5 with LTE bands 3, 7 and UMTS 2100 MHz and 850 MHz. Learn more about bands, supported locations and carriers at apple.com/watch/cellular

There is no such thing as “country-locked”.

the architecture of the watch e-sim simply copies an iPhone’s sim content to the watch - it is a simple action without any “locking” shenanigans. That’s why there is a 1:1 dependency on the iPhone and the watch.

my sister’s watch, which I purchased in Japan (series 4), works fine in Australia, where she lives.
