I must be getting old: I think "Ooooh - shiny new Macs!" then "But what would I actually do with one of those that my existing one can't do?"

My only (vague) concern is when OSX is no longer written for Intel based machines. Until then I am sure my current machine will more than suffice. I could probably replace that with an Air and a monitor without affecting my output at all these days.

Wouldn't mind a new macbook... Current 2014 15in barely holds a charge and anti-glare is failing. But its still snappy and does what I need when at a desk.

The new models never tempted me since they got rid of all the ports. If the speculations are true and magsafe, SD reader, HDMI are back I may be tempted.

Rumour has it that the high-end workstations (Mac Pro) will continue to use Intel. Each new Intel revision will delay the OS death knell.

If Apple can announce a Mac Mini with M1X that has minimum 32GB RAM support, I would be buying one. Load Parallels on it with Win 11 for ARM and that is me set. If the HDMI port will be 2.1 spec then even better so I can get 120Hz natively on the OLED TV.

It will give me OSX, Win 11 and Linux via WSL on Win 11 ARM OS via same hardware that is small and uses bugger all power.

Do whatever you want to do man.

Got my Macbook needs covered with my Macbook Air M1, but still curious about how far they have been able to push the M1X or M2X processor for the Macbook Pros.

Mostly because that will give some hints as to how powerfull the next M1X or M2X iMac 27/30" will be - which I will be buying as my main machine when it arrives.

Not happy with the Macbook Air as the main machine, too many troubles with the external USB-C monitor and sleep/wake.

Oh. Well that's good. I have an iMac Pro workstation which is reliable and fast (64GB, 4TB SSD, Xeon 10 core) and no reason to change it as long as the OS continues to be available.

The new MacBook Pro’s are looking really nice. Makes me think the new iMac 30” is going to be worth the wait.

If you use a MacBook Pro for your main machine the new MacBooks should be on your list.

14" 10 core 16/16/16 1Tb on order - first new Mac since 2016 (and first actual purchase with my own money since 2012!)

Should be here 1st November, delivery dates blowing out already....

Looking forward to it :-)

Nice looking machines, probably do what I always do and wait for them to start turning up in the referb store and grab one.

Sadly, this is quite common, the only fix is using an active USB-C to HDMI dongle.

The new MacBook Pros look really good for those who need high end gear, but I don't need anything that fancy.

I had planned to upgrade my three year old 13" MacBook Pro this month, but I don't want to buy the lower end 13" machines because they still have the Touch Bar. I don't really think I have that much to gain by moving to the existing MacBook Air.

I think I might have to stick with what I've got and wait for the next round of updates.

That’s fair enough, although worth knowing an M1 MBA outperforms all the Intel MBPs for speed and battery life by a big margin. I suspect an M1 MBA would be a big step up… but it depends on your usage as ever.

Gripes - Apple computers, desktop & Laptops, are becoming exorbitantly expensive. I know I am an  fan/nut but in Dec 2013 I paid approx $3000 for my current iMac 27", 14.2, 1Tb fusion drive with 64Gb 3rd party RAM. For an approx equivalent machine now I would be paying approx $5000.

It is not as if Apple needs the money, even to cover the R&D, they are still making squillions.

Here is a breakdown for the fiscal Q3 2021.

  • $39.57 billion: iPhone (Up 49.7% YOY)
  • $8.24 billion: Mac (Up 16.38% YOY)
  • $7.37 billion: iPad (Up 12% YOY)
  • $8.78 billion: Wearables, Home, and Accessories (Up 36.12% YOY)
  • $17.49 billion: Services (32.90% YOY)

It is the old quandary of drop price and maybe sell more or keep prices higher and sell less. My personal thoughts is drop price and sell more by bringing in more converts.

Whilst the difficult we can do immediately, the impossible takes a bit longer. However, miracles you will have to wait for.

What are you comparing it with?

Your iMac has a regular screen while the current iMacs have a Retina screen.

Your current iMac has a regular HD with a small SSD. If you are comparing that with a 1TB SSD you are not comparing apples to apples.

You are right though that you would have to shell out at least $5000 NZD for an iMac 27" with 1TB SSD today. But don't think anyone should buy one now. Wait a few months and the new M1 Pro/Max version will be out with (probably) a bigger screen and much more power than the current Intel ones.

You also have to factor in the beloved NZD,

in 2013 it was ~82c USD, but when the 2020 iMacs were released we were about 62c USD,

That's a 25% cut in purchasing power

but as above, the 27s have been left to wither on the vine,  but in terms of pricing when they release the replacement M1 machines we should get some relief given we are over 70c USD,

Although there is still the unanswered question about whether the larger M1 iMac will lose user upgradable RAM... which I have a feeling is coming... and will make lots of people grumpy...
