FWIW Mine and my wife's orders just updated as "shipped" from Apple.

Mine - Pro Max 512 and hers Pro 256

Interestingly hers had an estimated delivery of late October when she placed the order with mine estimating 28th - they have both now aligned it seems.

…and delivered safely to West Auckland

It never ceases to amaze me the excitement a new Apple product release generates. The number of people who immediately commit to thousands of dollars of spend (in a cost of living crisis) for a device that for 99% of people does almost exactly what their previous iPhone does, and then excitedly await its delivery. Don't get me wrong, I love a bit of new tech, but this is extraordinary and has been since Apple started making consumer devices.

No wonder Apple is worth trillions. I don't think any business in the history of businesses has been as adept at getting people to throw money at it.

Well, people have good reasons, too. My phone is an XS which is 5 years old and only lasts about an hour in active use, and it won't fully charge wirelessly because between the lower wireless charging efficiency and the knackered battery, it gets too hot, and stops. Its performance on iOS 16 is marginal with noticeable stuttering, so I'm certainly not upgrading it to iOS 17.

But also, as my job is in a security class with potential national security implications if my work credentials were stolen because my iPhone was 0-dayed by the Chinese government, I have a responsibility to make sure the patches are up to date on it. To be fair, they'll probably keep iOS 16 patched for at least another 2 years - but the phone already doesn't make it through the day if it isn't sitting on a charger.

I could spend a couple of hundred dollars and get the battery replaced, but it would still have the marginal iOS 16 performance.

So, I pre-ordered a new iPhone, which I expect will last at least another 5 years, and will offer the old phone to the MIL as an upgrade from her last hand-me-down.

The iPad is slightly older than the phone, but it doesn't stutter and there's no big problem with the battery, so I'm keeping that till the security updates stop.

I don't really feel like that's 'throwing money' at Apple.

No work phone? I used to work at 2D and was surprised that none of us received work phones.

On my first day I was like "Sooo.... who do I speak to about getting a work phone??"

Everyone looked at me funny.

Nope, never got a work phone from 2D. Mind you, you had to jump through hoops if you wanted anything except one of those ghastly Sharp clamshells by the time I left Vodafone, too.

Hey now - just because none of the last 4 iPhone iterations helped to fill the gaping void in my soul, doesn’t mean that *this* one won’t, right?

Right?

I'm talking about the significant number of people who buy when a new phone model comes out, not because their phone is broken or failing.

Well ... I'm sure there must be some, but I don't personally know any - and we are firmly in the socioeconomic class who could if we wanted to.

The cost, or opportunity cost isn't that great. Definitely not as much as some people believe.

For example, getting an iPhone 15 Pro Max will cost you around $2000 (RRP $2499) via 2degrees' $500 off deal.

In 12 months time, when iPhone 16 comes out, one could probably sell the 15 Pro Max for $1800-$1900.

That's only a depreciation of $100-$200 for having the top of the line phone yearly.

Some people work in tech, and may need to be up to date with these minor advances.

Went to Noel L yesterday to get a 15 pro. All sold out. Just went online to order one and they have taken the pros and max off their site.

Yeah, that's weird - just nuked the 15 Pro's off the website.

JB and Harvey Norman are still taking reservations.

For those wondering when the next shipment will come for 2degrees - The customer service rep over the phone told me that he was informed that the next iPhone batch/shipment will arrive on 2nd of October.

apgz: Still no Comms from 2degrees whatsoever

As per my last two years, temper your expectations! Your order will arrive when it arrives and they will have very little meaningful information about where you are in the queue and what the ETA will be, regardless of what the website or your original order indicated as a delivery time.

It may well turn up shortly, but if you assume it could be 4-6 weeks then you will less likely feel disappointed!

haha fair enough, this will be my first iPhone since the 4 and my first iPhone pre-order.

The current phone I'm using and my last pre-order was the S21 Ultra which actually arrived 2 days before the scheduled release date.

Suffice to say, lessons learnt lol

Still amazes me that after 15 years of sale history and pre-order data, Apple still cannot produce enough to meet demand. Are their sweat shops that understaffed?
