I'm interested in this comment. As a hobbyist photographer the camera in the iPhone is the thing that I'm least interested in, as I can't imagine myself using a camera phone of any type now that I'm accustomed to the image quality of an SLR.

Hi,
Part of the beauty of digital image capture is the ability of sharing moments. I don't want to carry my SLR around with me, I got sick of carrying both a cell phone & small digital camera..... so having an iPhone means I can capture something & share it - not create an 'ultimate image' (altho' an Aussie photographer has just won some award for a montage of iPhone shots). I think that 2 or 3 megapixels is plenty of quality to share around or print to 5"x7". I've used my 3G iPhone to show clients' location recces, prop choices & talent casting.... but where it falls down is close-up detail & mid-distance focus. As an exercise in my own discipline, I've been keeping a blog going from the iPhone & just using apps on the phone to edit the images - it's a great bit of fun to do this instead of having to take the card out of the SLR, load the large quantity of data onto the computer, crank up Photoshop & then labour over all the controls.... for the image to be then (often) viewed small on a website or an emailed newsletter or printed thumbnail size in a catalogue.
People also respond sooo differently when a large-lensed SLR is pointed at them, as opposed to a cell phone held up. It's nice to get a bit more spontaneity back into my photography....and I like playing around with video. I have had Cycorder on my phone, but it's pretty low-res & a slow frame rate.
So, yeah....I'm busy talking myself into a 3GS & have even put my 3G on TradeMe to see what happens....I know what the phone will do & I know that it's either as 'closed' or as 'open' as I want it to be...and by the way, I think I spent less time jailbreaking than I have in the past trying to learn how to just operate other cellphones & then search the web for things like a stopwatch to download for my phone... and then find that it was poorly implemented & buggy, so I'd go searching for other stopwatches, etc, etc...

Cheers,
Mike

It's not hate (in my case). It's just me trying to understand why people are happy with a closed system - and try to break out of it.

The function that the iPhone gives you and the fantistic UI it has is undoubtable the best UI I have used on a mobile phone. If that means I have to jailbreak it so it's no longer a 'closed' system so I can get the extra things Apple don't want to give us (for whatever reason) then that is what I'll do. At least with a closed system you know the quality of the programs and apps is going to be of a certain standard....unlike a lot of WinMo programs.

My point exactly. Too many things to do to have it working as it should from the start.

Not really too many things to have to do. You run a program on your computer which has roughly six easy steps, most of which are clicking ok in some format or other, and voila, one open system.

I'd love one. It's just too expensinve to justify something like that now.

Please tell me you mean for you personally. As opposed to the actual price of the iPhone is too expensive. Otherwise I would refer to you to this post

Windows Mobile has a lot of problems. The majority of it though I think is in the UI - which Apple has done really well on their own system. The Windows Mobile OS itself is fine. But that damn UI...
The WinMo UI is getting better but you must agree that's a lot to do with Apple producing the Mobile OSX UI. Even look at the picture from billgates' post, it has the Mobile OSX dock style along the bottom.

I guess we could all debate for ever which is best, at the end of the day it's personal preference. I just wish people wouldn't slate the product just because they don't like the greater company. (not saying you did that Mauricio, but a lot of people do)

I refered to WinMo's as a POS, and I should retract that as it's not true. They're not all POS, and if the iPhone wasn't around I would more than likely have one.

Cheers

Without wanting to drag things OT, or turn this into a "my phone is better than your phone" debate. Here's a quick 2 cents worth...

freitasm:

I guess you could kind of liken it to the approach WxC have taken with the VFX service?.. by keeping a tight control they can (theoretically) better ensure quality and user experience is as high as possible. There certainly are trade offs, and of course it's also turned into a great business strategy for them (lets not kid ourselves).

I've spent a fair bit of time playing and tinkering with smartphones over the years (usually Windows Mobile/PPC based), it was always fiddly, buggy, and a lot of options and conventions MS use are just plain bizarre.

For me personally, I've come to the realisation that I would rather just buy something that I know should not give me any real hassles. And while the iPhone is by no means perfect (copy & paste in v3!?). It's a good fit for me so far.

I can only think of a couple of applications where I feel background processes are missing.. foremost would be Skype, and the other would be some kind of a GPS tracking application. The Skype one may well be (more or less) solved when they integrate push notifications.

And yes, I will be buying a 3GS. Sarah will be inheriting my current 3G.

nzbullet: @billgates (and other Apple Haters) why, why, why do you post and read Apple threads when you hate them anyway?? I don't post in the WinMo threads saying what a POS this is and what a POS that is. I just don't get it.

Thread title - Will you be buying a iPhone 3GS? I replied No and the reason behind it. I or anyone else for the matter is not stopping you to post in WinMo threads.

nzbullet:Also @billgates why would you need to have TomTom and Remote Desktop running at the same time? Why? Is it because they take so long to load that it is easier to keep them running all the time?

As Steve98 said Apps on the iPhone load qucik enough not to have that issue.

No it does not take long time to run apps individually on Win Mo but the whole point of multitasking is to save time. I am not going to close TomTom whihch is already running and en-route to someone's house, then run RDP, finish with it, then go back to TomTom and enter their address again.

nzbullet:Also if you really want apps running in the background *that* much stop whining about it, jailbreak and install 'backgrounder'. You can pick and choose which apps you want to automatically run in the background or you can manually enable them when using the app.

"jailbreak". You summed it up there yourself. So you have to hack the device in order to support multitasking which is still not true multitasking. I would like to see a word or powerpoint application running and say TomTom or remote desktop running in the background at the same time.

Why should I spend $1100 on a locked device where I have to go through Itunes to do everything on a device?

nzbullet:
In reply to the first thread, if your an Apple Hater and feel you must reply just put "I won't be getting the iPhone because I am an Apple Hater" You all try to make out as if your WinMo POS has no flaws, ok so the iPhone does have it's flaws....but not as many as most if not all WinMo's.

END RANT.

Do I hate Apple? Yes. Do I hate iPhone as a whole? No. I said above in my post before that iPhone has the potential to be one of the best but it's Apple's usual dictatorship policy's that keep me away from buying their products and not to mention sky high prices for their products which I can buy for half the price with other hardware/software vendors.

Do whatever you want to do man.

Hey, just had a look at your blog. Really cool.

Do you have a list of iPhone camera apps you've found good/fun/useful?

(looking forward to my 3GS next week...)

Yep, additional xxxxx would be great but those currently on iPhone plans already know their baseline.

As a potential new iPhone customer I'd like an idea of any new iPhone plans to conincide with the 10th July release.....

i won't be surprised one little bit to see a press release from Telecom either later today, or early next week to say it will be on sale from them next Friday as well.

But I guess we'll see....
