Hey guys, just need some clarification :)

My friend is going to live in the US for 3 months and is wanting to pick up an iphone 3GS from AT&T. What is the deal with early termination charges etc?

As far as i could figure out

You would pay 199 upfront
Monthly charge would be around $70.00USD (30 data + 40 calling) If you cancel within 30 days AT&T has the ability to request the phone be returned if it is over 30 days you keep the phone and pay early termination fee of $175USD

And yes i do know it will need to be jail broken to work in NZ

Anything im missing?

Cheers

I think AT&T lock their phones, so you'll have to wait for an unlocking exploit to be found & utilized. Probably won't have to wait long though.

Don't bother paying AT&T for their "unlock", why pay when you can do it yourself for free? :P

I would say he will have a hard time signing up to a contract if he isn't a US resident and can't prove that he will be in the country for the duration of the contract...

Agreed. Having a credit history is a big deal in the US, so if he's only there for 3 months and without any credit history I'd say they'd be reluctant to sign him up. Worth a try, but they will look at it from the perspective of: "well after 3 months what's to stop him leaving the country and never paying us again".

There is NO unlock for iPhone 3GS 3.1.2 at the moment. It may take a very long time for an unlock to come out if ever. Another problem you will face is the actual jailbreak has been patched by Apple with the new 3GS' being shipped out.

So most likely you're friend won't have an unlock or a jailbreak until a new exploit is found.

No, but you will need a US social security No, or someone with an AT&T account.
I think you have to terminate within 30 days( which is what I done )
