Howdy folks,

I purchased an iphone from OZ that was either on a Telstra or Optus contract originally, the previous owner had it disconnected and then done a full factory restore.

NOW it has a "plug into itunes" symbol and "insert a valid and unlocked sim to activate iPhone" showing on the screen.

I plugged it into the latest version of itunes and again it says "insert a valid and unlocked sim to activate iPhone"

SO, if I just go and get a Telecom XT SIM card, pop it in the iPhone then connect to itunes, will I be away laughing, or is this phone locked up like a criminal????

It will be Carrier locked..If you want to use it with a Sim card which is not from Its original Carrier then you will have to jailbreak it

All is not lost...

All of the carriers in Australia are obliged to unlock their iPhones, there are differing time frames and costs on when you can do it depending on the carrier.

i.e. Vodafone AU is $25 after 6 months.

If I was you I'd ring Apple on 0800 MY APPLE and supply them with your phones serial number. They will be able to tell you which carrier the phone was purchased from.

Then, contact the carrier and find out what will be involved in unlocking the phone.

Jailbreaking and doing an unlock runs you the real risk of having problems down the line with getting updates from Apple etc.
