Grats! I wish I had a relative or someone I can trust in Aussie that can buy one for me :(
At this rate I'll probably have to settle for NZ release.

In case it is of interest to anyone, I was in the central city Apple Store in Sydney yesterday. They don't have 3G models at all, only the wi-fi models. They weren't prepared to say when 3G models will be in stock again, but I have a friend over there who has been told it will be at least 3 weeks.

I wasn't buying....just asking.

Well I picked up my iPad in Melbourne yesterday but what a mission!

I went to five stores before I found the very last one, a Wi-FI+3G 64GB model. I only wanted the Wi-Fi version but I couldn't really leave empty handed so ended up buying it from Myer. The sales guy said they had a batch of 125 units arrive that morning and by 4pm I was buying the very last one. Crazy.

Apple Chadstone had none at all, Apple Doncaster had a couple units left, but in terms of the CBD, I pretty much bought the very last one in the city.

To top it off I got charged $76 GST at the airport. In all my years of bringing goods into the country (which I always declare) I had never once even been asked what I was bringing in. So when I got asked this afternoon what I was wanting to bring in to the country I knew it wasn't going to end well!

My impression is they are. As soon as I said what it was I was bringing in (he knew what one was), he chuckled, scribbled some codes on my card, and directed me to Lane C which I soon found out is the 'you don't leave until you pay' lane.

Thanks for sharing your experience.

I'm sick of waiting for the NZ release as I was expecting that they would be taking pre-orders for NZ customers by now, so I'm probably going to try and pick one up in Melbourne myself when I'm over there in a couple of weeks. I was thinking that I might give the Doncaster store a call on Monday to see how long their waiting list is, and whether they can put me on it such that there will be one available for me if I drop in while I'm over there.

I'm looking for a 32Gb 3G model - were there many of those available while you were hunting around? Would I get warranty coverage in NZ?

Zero. Apple Doncaster had a few 64GB Wi-FI+3G units, and the only models Myer had was the one I bought, they said the shipment of 125 units were all the 64GB Wi-Fi+3G, so that was all that was around. Apple Chadstone said they weren't expecting their next shipment of iPads for another couple weeks.

The iPad warranty is international, but only where the iPad is sold in that country. So until it's released here Australia would still be the nearest repair centre!

when is the NZ release (yes I know its 'coming July) but I would have also thought that they would be available for pre-order by now. I was in Canberra last week but there were no Ipads to be had (although the central DSE got some 32's in the day after I left!!).

That would actually be quite good timing for me. I'll give them a call tomorrow and see if I can reserve one, although I'm not sure whether they'll do that over the phone but it's worth a try. If I can't get the 32Gb+3G then I'd be comfortable with a 64Gb+3G, but none of the other models suit me.

Okay, that's fine since the NZ release is pretty close anyway.

I don't think you'll be allowed to reserve one at all sorry, but feel free to prove me wrong.

Based on comments on forums I was under the impression that the Apple Stores have waiting lists but whether they would add a name to the list based on a casual phone call from New Zealand might be questionable.

The other strategy that I was thinking of was, assuming that NZ pre orders commence before I go to Australia, I could place a pre-order here but still try to get hold of one while in Australia. If I manage to get one in Australia then hopefully I can cancel my NZ pre-order but if I don't manage to get one in Australia then at least I will get one from the first NZ shipment. I'll just have to make sure that I take a close look at the pre-order cancellation policy.

You can cancel at any point up until it ships.

I did pre-order mine on launch day with Magnum Mac, but no idea when they'll have it.

Okay, it's sounding like a good plan then.

I'm predicting that NZ pre-orders will start in the next couple of weeks with delievery promised for late July, or perhaps pushed out to August. Ideally if someone over the ditch has what I want in stock at the time then I will pick one up when I'm over there in mid July, but failing that it won't be too long to wait to get one here.
