MattD: Why is that much usage bad?

Because if I use those 5 hours in the first 8 like I did today, then my phone is dead for the remaining part of the day and I may still be out on the road.

I don't mind charging every single night but I need it to last a heavy usage day (within reason).

Someone I know in Christchurch with a similar usage is claiming a 75% battery after similar usage. I'm not sure if the usage is actually similar but the screen was left on for the whole day and with usage the battery was still at 75%.

I'm on Vodafone atm. Blimmin' contracts.

I jumped between VF and XT and noticed I'm getting 5 bars with XT where I'm usually getting 2/3 bars with VF. keen to do a day of each and see if theres any difference on battery life. I'm 12 hrs standby, 4 hours use and 50% left. Not sure how to turn on battery percentage.

Settings, General, Usage -> Battery Percentage ON/OFF

(not available on iPhone 3G).

Are you using iPhone 4? I would be happy with those stats. Mine are terribad.

iPhone 3gs with IOS4

Off the charger each morning at 6.45am, generally back on charge about 10pm generally still showing 60% on the battery depending on how much talk time I had during the day. A bad day of talk time (like when several sections of the WAN die) and I have dropped as low as 10%. On goods days I use about 12 mins talk time.

Patient: Doctor... it hurts when I do this.
Doctor: Then don't do that any more

Might be more about what functions you are performing.  Also may need to manage expectations of device.  Would it be the same of any Windows 7, Android, Blackberry, Palm device.
What power would you also expect from other category of devices after 5hrs (eg notebook)
Although this sounds like it is not performing, in my experience, this is an improvement. Just that people often compare with a standard 2G mobile phone.
However.. there are some Aus users who are claiming 24-48hrs usage from iPhones.. possibly stronger signal?

Maybe any 3G smartphone is not for you.

You can always break your contract.. and get a joining rebate.

Dude, I'm disappointed in the battery life because others with the exact same phone are reporting *significantly greater times*.

If the reported battery life was what I was getting, why would I complain?

Can't get blood from a stone.

Remember that unless you have actually run the battery right down within the last month or three your battery meter is likely to be inaccurate.
Recalibrating your battery does nothing for actual battery life but you can end up with quite different numbers showing on the % at the end of the day.
My battery life on 3GS dramatically dropped after iOS4 was installed. Turning off wifi and push mail has helped me out. iOS4 leaves the wifi polling when locked apparently. Not convinced of the correlation yet, but the days I leave Skype backgrounded it seems to eat battery faster. I often don't make a day now without adding power. Just picked up an extra battery pack device from sella for $30ish for emergencies

Got a link to this? Even if it is just from the manufacturer website just so I can take a look at an option?

They're ugly, they're cheap, they don't quite give me a full charge on my 3GS. But in an emergency it's handy!

I actually got mine from another trader but about same price.

Sure but unless you are doing exactly the same functions, have the same signal strength you cannot quite compare.

eg.. today I was using video and camera a lot, and was in metro area where voda drops right down to 2G  Yell,

However instead of my normal usage as claimed above... I have 20% left after only using 3hr 38min. and standby of 5hr 25min.
Completely poor performance in comparison to my 6hrs usage and 23 hr standby the other night, but I am using functions that are more CPU intensive and power hungry.  Generally the temperature of the phone was a lot hotter so could tell it was consuming more power.
I will charge now on mains (not USB) and will probably get a good 24hrs if not using video camera.

Yesyerday I was up 14hrs, used 2.5 hours and at 78% - By that reasoning I should get around 3x that usage... I haven't cycled the battery dead yet tho so it more than likely isn't calibrated properly yet...

The biggest thing I notice was dropping a XT sim in it - On VF where I live I get 2 bars at home and at work (cbd) and multiple drop outs on the bus to work. With XT I get 5 bars damn near everywhere.

After having the phone just over a week my stats on since my last charge are: usage 6hrs 44, standby 1day 12 hrs, call time 1hr 14 and sitting on 12% charge.

Seems pretty good. Still need an overnight charge though unless you're only using the phone occasionally.
