While comparing the two is easy they are very different technically.

3G video calling is circuit switched based using a 3GPP standard and is a maximum of 64kbps.

Facetime uses a custom implimentation that is based around SIP (with no proxy required) that is tied to your mobile number. Because it is SIP based there is certainly a lot of potentiall in the future to enable calling from other devices using Facetime and not many technical reasons why a device such as a Polycom Video Phone on your home VoIP connection can't send or receive a Facetime call from an iPhone user.

My biggest gripe however is that Apple created yet another custom way of doing this rather than adopting one of the methods that already exists.

The reason Facetime is limited to WiFi is simply a bandwidth one.

There are also no technical reasons why an iPad can't send and receive SMS, or work with a USB mouse. But Apple does what Apple wants, and connecting Facetime on iPhone 4 to anything that doesn't have an Apple sticker on the side isn't likely to be high on their priority list. :-) Hec, it took them 3 tries to get a camera on the front of the iPhone in the first place!

//Is also grumpy because DSL uplink at my place is ~250kps...

iPad Air + iPhone SE + 2degrees 4tw!

These comments are my own and do not represent the opinions of 2degrees.

All my freinds in NZ are too poor to buy iPhone 4 or cant be bothered, happy with black and white nokia's, and all my mates in the UK wont because they all have 3gs and dont see the point. anntegate blah blah.

Im hoping they link facetime and iChat, and allowing skype in on the video chat as well.
