My iPhone 4 is currently pissing me off by showing this message every 10 minutes or so (sometimes not for a while, sometimes every few minutes). It basically thinks there's something connected to the dock connector (there isn't).

It just happened again while I was typing this (I'm not typing this on the iPhone, it's sitting on my desk). The error cuts out the audio as well because obviously it thinks it's connected to a dock or speakers etc. - but the audio comes back after 10 seconds or so.

I've tried a Restore, and I've tried running paper back and forwards over the connector pins in case there was lint in there or something (there wasn't).

Do you think it's worth the hassle buying a can of compressed air and blasting the connectors in case there is a tiny grain of sand or something that's bridging two pins? (not that I've been near a beach in this amazing Auckland weather).

Or should I just bite the bullet and begin the lengthy repair process with Vodafone?

lengthy repair process? where did you hear that? My last repair for my iPhone with Vodafone took 2 working days! Last time I checked that wasn't lengthy.

Its usually caused by dust or something in the connectors down the bottom shorting. I have the same problem on my 3GS which I have to get fixed soon.

Oh gawsh, I hope you're right! I had just heard many a horror story about people being without their phones for a good 2-3 weeks.

To me, lengthy is anything longer than "we'll ship you a new one overnight", considering this phone is less than a month old. Although 2 working days is totally acceptable also.

I had this happen to my iPhone when it accidentally got sprayed by water!

Luckily I switched it off and a couple of hours in a dry room sorted it out. It's been fine since (6months ago).

There could be something stuck on the contacts in the charging port. If you haven't exposed it to water I'd recommend taking it straight for a warranty replacement.

Definitely haven't exposed it to water. Unless it's freaking out at the humidity in Auckland but I don't imagine that's the case considering these phones live in places like Thailand.

I'm gonna give it a couple of days to hopefully 'fix itself', after which point I'll take it in for repair/replacement if it's still misbehaving.

I got this message last night when I plugged it into my Belkin USB mains charger (instead of Apple one that came in box).

"Humidity in Auckland"?

Where?

i'd try the air can, and if not take it back, you shouldn't have to put up with that if you have done nothing untoward with it. 

I ocassionally get that message with a car charger, when i plug it in at funny angles.

But i still use the USB cable i got with my ipod 4gen, and still works, many years ago. oh those where the days, when they gave you a case, a belt clip 2 cables, a video cable, a dock, a cleaning cloth, a sleeve to put it in...

Usually caused by water damage or corrosion on the connector for the dock/cable. Only resolvable by repair/swap. Backup first.

So I ended up taking my iPhone back to Vodafone New Lynn (the one inside LynnMall) on Wednesday afternoon.

Talk about great service - I have a brand new one (or a 'refurbed' brand new one) sitting here Sync'ing/restoring as we speak. So far so good - no issues with phantom accessories and the Sleep/Wake button on this one doesn't rattle which is a good sign.

So, thanks Vodafone for the speedy repair/swap!

The saga continues! The replacement phone I received on Friday had a shocking battery. It drained 25% in about 90 minutes of just sitting in my pocket during a movie (Piranha 3D). I had two push notifications from Facebook during this time but the phone was otherwise sleeping.

It then dropped from 75% to 56% in about three hours of light usage - it was playing a couple of iPod playlists with no interfering (no skipping/shuffling/interaction etc.).

You may think I'm expecting too much of the battery but my first iPhone 4 (the one I bought on launch day) had outstanding battery life. It was still at 90% after a day on the mountain - including filming videos, taking lots of photos, several phonecalls and 3G use (email & YouTube) up the mountain too. So I think I definitely got a dud with the replacement one.

Dropped it back to Vodafone yesterday and am just waiting for Brightpoint to swap it again. If only they could swap it for my original one (just without the Phantom Accessory menace).

Good to see you keeping your sense of humour and yeah your battery sure was stuffed! I can listen to my audiobooks all day and not have a drop that bad!

Anyone know what might be causing a delay in Vodafone sending my unit to Brightpoint for repair/replacement? I took the phone in on Monday and phoned Brightpoint today - they haven't even received it yet. Brightpoint have told me that their current repair/replace turnaround time for iPhone 4's is pretty snappy - it's just a matter of the phone actually getting there in the first place.

Is it possible for me to pick my phone up from the store and deliver it myself to Brightpoint? I'd ask someone at the store but they don't answer their phone.
