I have a 16gb Iphone 3GS approx 1 year old (covered by Applecare for another 2 years).

I notice that most times when I place a call while in 3G coverage (Vodafone), once the call has finished, the phone drops back to 2G (shows the 2g network logo rather than 3G network logo).

If I then attempt to refesh my email, it takes some time 2-3mins before 3G re-appears?

Is this a known issue? Doesnt really bother me, but a bit of a pain when I am in a rush to check emails after a telephone conversation and attachements take forever to download under 2G.

Thanks.

When I had my 3GS, sometimes there would be a delay in switching between WiFi and 3G so I would lose my data connection for a minute or so. If I was impatient, I would just toggle flight mode on and off and it would sort itself out.

I realise you're not talking about WiFi but the toggle does seem to reset the radios in the phone if they're in a state of flux.

I've had a lot more incidents of dropping back to 2g lately on my 3GS.

I've had it for approx 6 months and it's definitley been worse over the last 2 months.

Off topic but AppleCare for iPhone extends your warranty to a total of 2 years from date of purchase it does not add 2 years to the 1 year standard warranty.

Greg you'll find it's a combination of Vodafone's crap network and the iPhone's obsession with stepping down to 2G that's most likely causing that to happen, used to happen to me as well. You'll probably find that the phone dropped to 2G while you were on the call, how quickly 3G comes back might depend on how strong the 3G signal is where you are at the time.

Change to XT like I did, iPhone and XT were made for each other, you'll have a much better experience!

I have noted my Android (HTC Magic) also drops back to GSM at the end of a call, I mostly notice this at home here in the office when at the conclusion of the call the TDM cadence comes throught the PC's sound system for quite some time after, but not during the call.

At home here I am within 500m direct line of site of a Voda cell site, and the phone reports full strength at all times, so its not RF path related.
