alasta: I can't say I'm that impressed with the smart covers. I prefer my existing sleeve style case as it provides padding around the entire device to protect it against impact damage.

Agreed on the protection side of things and I'm not too sure how well the magnets will work to keep it in place. I guess we'll know soon enough, but the auto on/off when you open and close the cover is just brilliant (although in my Dad's words "isn't that what a laptop can do now?")

Cheers

mattwnz:  I hate the ugly thick bezel, and the screen is pretty low resolution, both problems I think they will fix in the next version.

You'll find the thicker bezel gives you more control over holding the device without activating anything on screen unintentionally. Gives you more ways to hold the device... imo. The screen resolution is a weaker point, although personally I find apps, movies and photos really pop and reading is very clear on the current screen. Some magazine apps however (or content suppliers to said apps) don't scan or scale their content properly. Tone Magazine via Zinio for eg looks terrible. Fuzzy text, grainy pictures, can't get a page a readable size full screen etc etc. Compare that with a dedicated newspaper app (The Herald for example) and you'll see how clear the screen can be.

Where other tablets offer a wider variety of resolutions, Apple is sparing developers the pain of having to scale (or letterbox) their apps to fit different devices. Doubling stuff is much easier ala the 2x button for older iPhone apps on the iPad screen, or the iPhone 4's retina display being exactly double the res of the 3G\S, but it will be a while before a cost effective and mass produced 2048x1536 screen is a reality for an iPad... There are rumours such an equipped iPad could be released as early as Sept this year, but whenever it arrives, I'll definitely be buying one of those puppies :-)

I am looking. Given the back is solid aluminium, I am not worried about bumps and scratches to that (as opposed to the glass on the front), so the magnetic cover would be good.

Even if you don't want a cover, you have to watch the video of it on the apple store, great video and concept.

Agreed. It's the same aluminum used on the MacBook's and they're incredible difficult to damage - I should know....mine goes through the wars on a daily basis and is still as new.

There's no reason to believe it won't be out here on the 25th so far.

I am definitely considering it.

The main use I would have for it is reading a wifi enabled OBD-II reader in my car and possibly watching youtube in bed. I hate having to hookup and use my laptop. Such a pain.

I read the news on my first gen in the morning in bed and sometimes stream video from my PC at night. It's great for that.

alasta: My plan is to buy every second generation of iPad/iPhone which means that I will upgrade my iPhone 3GS to an iPhone 5 this year, and I will upgrade my original iPad to an iPad 3 next year.

I can't say I'm that impressed with the smart covers. I prefer my existing sleeve style case as it provides padding around the entire device to protect it against impact damage.

Yep pretty much where I am going as well.

The difference between Retina and not on the iPhone 4 is like night and day. As for the iPad 2 display it is the same as the 1st generation. Would be amazing if/when the iPad finally gets a Retina display, can't wait.

Yep, getting the iPad2 although I am slightly concerned about the magnets. I just don't like having magnets on anything, especially since I throw my phone, camera, USB sticks and devices all in the same bag.

I'd only just got my Gen 1 iPad but Apple agreed to take it back & refund the money. They also confirmed release in NZ is due for 25th March, but they wouldn't take a pre-order.
