iPhone 3GS users to create a Personal Wifi Hotspot for 1 connection

Just updated and sorry JohnR, you're wrong as the 3GS does not do Personal WiFi hotspot at all. Just USB and Bluetooth like always.

This INFO is not incorrect

John

Are you 110% sure JohnR? As I have a 3GS purchased from Vodafone NZ (never jailbroken) and there is only Bluetooth and USB personal hotspot - not WiFi personal hotspot as you claim.

Move to New Zealand's best fibre broadband service (affiliate link). Note that to use Quic Broadband you must be comfortable with configuring your own router.

That's funny to read. It sums up my experience with vodafone for the 15 years I was with them. I lost count of how many times vodafone staff had no idea what they were talking about or had conflicting information. 2degrees really is a breath of fresh air.

I installed 4.3 on my 3GS yesterday and started having battery problems straight away.
I hard booted the phone and recharged it but after 2 hours it flattened itself completely and switched itself off.
I was just about to roll it back but decided to try one more time and
I recharged it and turned off bluetooth and it seems to have settled down again now and holding charge.
It was really strange as nothing was running apart from WiFi and Bluetooth which I always have running under previous IOS's.
WiFi is still on now but bluetooth is off and its staying up ok..
Anyone else had this problem ?

Yes I am %110 sure go back and read the thread other users have figured it out fine.

@scotteffone if you had read back over the thread instead of just coming here to run me down you would of seen I am correct.

WiFi HotSpot on iOS 4.3 is not available for iPhone 3GS, only iPhone 4.

I haven't yet noticed any deterioration in battery life in my 3GS, but it seems that plenty of other people have:

Do you think you could find a 3GS with 4.3 and try it out please (if possible)? Let me know what you find out (If WiFI hotspot works on a 3GS).

Cheers

On mine the settings menu has an option for 'personal hotspot' and when you switch this on it gives instructions only on how to connect with bluetooth or USB.

I can confirm that my iPad is unable to locate any Wifi network hosted by my iPhone.

So in my case the evidence supports the argument that there is no Wifi hotspot support on the 3GS.

My 3GS isn't even an NZ iPhone; it's from Australia, and it has only USB & BT hotspot support.

If you'd like to complain to someone who might listen, here is a good place to start.

This is correct. Everyone is getting confused by incorrect information provided earlier in the thread.

There is NO WIFI HOTSPOT ON 3GS models. All that has changed is a new option in the settings menu, called "Personal Hotspot" which is just tethering renamed... No WIFI option.

Ah, missed that post from Mauricio. You know, all this could have been avoided by not (mis)using a term ordinarily reserved exclusively for the one thing that it ISN'T, on the 3GS. :-/

//Still at least we get security fixes, unlike the 3G.

Well, they won't now that the air is clear over "Wifi hotspot" vs. "Personal hotspot" - but they possibly would have if Wifi hotspot had worked on Vodafone-blessed iPhones vs. everyone else's.

On a vaguely related note, does anyone know when OS X 10.7 is due out? Is it in beta yet?
