I'm downloading a large file using my iPhone as a personal hotspot. 3 bars of service & the download for the first few minutes went at 300 kb/s but has now slowed to 45 kb/s (as reported by firefox's download window).

Is this due to the three bars of service or some limitation of the iPhone personal hotspot implementation or a limitation of the 3G network in general?

I think its Vodafone throtteling it.

Sometimes mine goes blazing fast for a phone (500kb etc) then usually settles on 39-42kb.

Def feels like throtteling to me

Damn that's annoying. Would they be able to identify that it's operating in tethered/hotspot mode or would it just be a general 3G restriction?

I'd say their network has been optimized for smaller files download and large file downloads are "managed"...

Fair enough. 3G on the phone itself is pretty good, especially with streaming video (youtube, livestation, collegehumour etc.)

I wouldn't even have to do this download if I hadn't already exhausted almost all my orcon 30gb cap with my (now working) youtube.
