Are these commonly used?

I don't although my iPad hasnt been used much, but I imagine that lowering the image quality a tad, and that an iPad is not going to be as exposed as an iPhone to potential scratches, that many probably don't use one?

It can still be scratched. Belkin ones are the best from my usage but you have to have the skill to put it on. The glossy ones are the best with no noticable loss in image quailty .The matte ones prevent glare, but can diminish the image quality a bit, but finger marks aren't as visable. Also the matte one feels nice under your fingers.

Have owned the original iPad since July'10 and an iPad 2 since early April and have never used a screen protector on either of them. No scratches on either of them either. We do use lightweight clear TPU backs for better grip and to stop the backs getting scratched though.
Both go into firm protective cases while travelling.

Ashka, how do you clean the fingerprints from the screen? Light wipe with a clean damp (water only) cloth?

A protective case should be used.
But screen protector is not a must.
It is touch screen, so it should be scratch proof.
However, I use both leather case and screen protectors for my ipad, because my 3 year old play with it everyday.

If you haven't tried a 'Euro cloth', you should. They are perfect for the iPad, tvs and computer monitors.

No Water just a microfibre glass cleaning cloth or a small cleaning cloth from the Optometrist that's in the travel case. Camera retailers also have lens cleaning cloths which work well..
