Growing indications this may well be on the cards, sporting a retina display.

This isn't the only source but - http://forum.tipb.com/ipad-3-forum/214970-ipad-3-october.html

I've been thinking for a while Apple could differentiate the iPad further with a higher spec version for those willing to pay for a more expensive version. A cut down version of the iPhone I find harder to imagine but yeah, iPad HD anyone?

Although sites and forums that report on Apple rumours something can often resemble echo chambers,

As with all Apple products until Apple announce an event , or advise reporters to prepare for an immediate announcement, the only one who knows anything solid is he of the black turtleneck....

Yeah I hear that alot. Just remember there are circa 10,000 employees at Apple. Unless SJ designs and builds every device himself in complete secrecy, I'm reasonably certain at least a small number within that 10,000 also know what's going on...

I don't bother posting every piece of Apple scuttlebutt on the interwebz, but this one seems to fit, to me at least.

Yeah we'll see.

Stuff knows how many times I've read about iPhone nanos, MacBook Airs were supposed to be released last month (granted they are coming), OS X Lion was supposed to be released yesterday, and so on.

I'm still gonna stick to the 2012 timeframe for iPad 3. From what I know, and of course it's only from reading stuff on the web, that guy would have to know someone pretty high up in the Apple executive to be told that the next iPad is coming in October.

MacBook Pro 13" w/ Touch Bar (Early 2017) | iPad Pro 10.5 Wi-Fi 128GB (Space Grey) | iPhone 8 Plus 64GB (Product RED) | HomePod (Space Grey) | Apple TV 4K | Apple TV (4th Generation) | Apple Watch Series 3 42mm (Space Grey)

iPhone "nano" will be a big seller I bet, given so many people are still happy with their 3gs's it would suggest a lower specc'd iPhone would fit the bill nicely to compete against the lower spec android onslaught

Wife wants an ipad so would be good timing if an update is on the horizon

I can't see this happening personally. Part of Apple's marketing strategy is to have reasonably long periods between product updates so that they can launch with a lot of fanfare, whereas the media would lose interest if they were to release an update after only six months.

The iPad 2 appears to be quite well specced and it should keep the market interested until March next year, but as others have noted anything is possible.

Apple seems to have a 12-15 month product cycle. iPhone seems to have a form factor update every second generation. So with that info in hand; I'd guess we're in for a upspecced 4 with A5 processor and more ram (they'll probably call it a 5 to match the iOS#) in about September and a iPad 3 next April.

Some are thinking iPod Touch with a 3G radio in it for the possible iPhone-Lite ... won't be a Nano in form factor but that's my pick for budget iPhone\Android competitor.

iPad 3 will be next year still yes. Even SJ said 2011 would be the year of iPad 2, hence this possible October release would be the same iPad 2 internals but with retina display. Normal iPads could retain their annual Feb\March release, and a newer model iPad Pro\HD commences Sept\Oct release?

It's a long wait for September to find out anyway ;-)

Didnt you know that every employee only works on only one component, then there is a lottery to send one engineer up to the office where he assembles the complete item. He is then killed and turned into a turtleneck that is worn at the unveiling so his sacrifice is recognised.

October?
October 2012 maybe.

I think their focus is on the next phone, it needs to be to compete with Android.
The iPad 2 is still a great product in the market that is selling well (so they say)

Android is an operating system, not a phone.

Good point, compete with phones using the Android operating system.

The way Apple is suing Samsung and now HTC I guess they can't compete in the market place any longer  so they have to compete in court..

You're quoting the HTC line there I notice, it's a dubious argument at best.

They won't do that, as it will piss off exisiting owners of the ipad 2, as it has only just ben released. The ipad2 is higher resolution than the iphone 4 with the retina display anyway with more pixels. There won't be an update until next year. The only way they may introduce a new ipad, is if it a higher speced ipad2. The updates later this year will be for a refreshed iphone and ipod

Too bad. Technology is constantly updating and you always know the thing you buy today will be archaic tomorrow
