$299 for 32gb iPhone 4S on the 2 year $80 contract... Great price, it's almost tempting.

Wow, those subsidies look way better than Vodafone's miserly equivalents.

I agree, they're surprisingly good prices. When you break down the total cost over 2 years ($2219) and you remove the price of the iPhone ($1199) if you bought it outright, the plan works out at just $42.50 per month. Pretty good for 300 text, 200 mins and 1GB data. You are tied in for 24 months though

I'm sure they will come up with something similar now Telecom jumped first

Can anyone clarify if the iphone 4s is covered under Telecom's phone insurance ?

Not entirely impressed with the packages given I pay $60 a month now for 50 minutes, 5000 texts, 1 gb data through them as part of a smartphone package. 300 text's is rather light.

Seems smarter to still buy direct from Apple ?

You're right, 300 texts is pretty light if you're used to 5000, but only if you actually need that many. I don't use anywhere near that many these days as have been sending msgs to my friends anywhere in the world using whatsapp or ping for years for free, and now have iMessage too

Fair point. I am just comparing what I am getting now vs what is on offer.

As has been pointed out elsewhere traditional TXT is dying anyway. With iMessage covering other iPhone users and various global cross platform options out there you should only be using TXT for people that do not have a smartphone yet. One of the driving reasons for getting a smart phone for my daughter was so that I could avoid traditional TXT's as it is a work phone and they start getting unhappy if you text more then 50 a month.

Also a handy tip when comparing plans, take into account any promo's you may have on your account. Some people are signed up to double your data with special offerings Telecom have had during the past year that may be running out shortly or in the near future.

Trouble with the 300 text thing is that the smartphone 'revolution' still hasn't really hit NZ yet - way too many people don't have smartphones yet, the people who would rely on traditional texting.

Was quite excited to see that Telecom is gong to be offering the iPhone later this week.. Was hoping to preorder an iPhone 64GB through them before my order with Apple went through and then cancel, but interestingly most of the iPhone 4S models (16-32GB) being preordered/sold through Telecom seem to have a targeted delivery of:

Estimated shipping time for the iPhone will be 3 to 5 days from November 11. Online pre-orders will take priority.

However when selecting the iPhone 64GB (black or white) this changes to:

Estimated shipping time for the iPhone 64GB will be 2-3 weeks. Online pre-orders will take priority.

.. Perhaps there is a shortage of 64GB iPhone 4S's? Might try my hand at Telecom here in Wellington at their new flagship store (looks like they might be selling from midnight) and see how I get on, but regardless, it's great to see another player in the game after the Vodafone fiasco last year...
