pmunnynz: As far as I'm aware we don't need to do anything. Part of the process of Telecom (or any network doing porting for that matter) getting the number closes off the account at the other end.
JimmyC: I only got mine done at lunch time but was told it would take effect just before 5pm.
Tell me, is there anything I need to cancel at the VF end, or is that all taken care of for me?

You shouldn't have to do anything, but give a week and call to check if the account is effectively closed. You should receive a final bill to pay.
