This is probably going to sound a bit sycophantic but it's not the case, I just wanted to say a BIG thank you to all the guys at Telecom.

I had a great time last night. I did wonder whether to go along as I did have an order in direct with Apple, but I decided it would be nice to go along and support the event as they had gone to the effort to open stores at midnight and to look after people for quite a few hours beforehand. It was fun meeting and chatting with likeminded 'geeks' who are happy to spend sleep time getting the latest gadget.

After having it confirmed that I would get my hands on an iPhone that evening (I have not been told this on previous launches and just been left to wait for hours and only be told after a very long time when they have run out and I am waiting for no reason when they could have told us hours earlier), I took the chance and cancelled my order with Apple as I waited. As number 35 in the queue I had my nice new 32GB White 4S in my hand by around 01:45.

Things turned a bit bad for me when I got home I setup my new toy and immediately had problems with Siri, it just didn't hear me, I couldn't get it to work at all apart from occasional times if I really shouted at it, and even then with bad results. Now, I have watched 'many' youtube videos of people using Siri and it never seemed this difficult then!

After a few hours sleep I continued with my investigations and found that when making a call i could not be heard either unless I used speakerphone or the headset. There was definitely a fault with the microphone.

After a post on here, a few of the members who are Telecom staff responded with help (thanks akia & plambrechtsen) and it was agreed I should go back to the Telecom Store. As I couldn't get down there for a few hours, and their phone was going to voicemail, Peter (who doesn't work in the store) went down from his office to explain to the manager my situation. How many times would you hear someone would do that for you in a company the size of Telecom!?

To cut a long story a little bit shorter (ok, it's already too long!), when I got to the store I found a phone had been put aside for me and on checking my original 4S it was confirmed that it did have this fault. But when they checked the procedure for faulty iPhones I was told it would have to be sent off to check I hadn't damaged it before I received a replacement. Naturally I said I would not be happy with this as I had only purchased the iPhone a matter of hours earlier and was pleased to say they understood the situation and after a few discussions between themselves out of earshot I was told they would let me have the replacement. It was nice to see that I did not have to get stroppy with these guys for them to do the right thing. They must have been very tired as I'm sure they are working very long hours and are having no rest at the moment dealing with people who want to be served 'right now', but to their credit they dealt with me as a customer in a way I am sure they would have liked to be treated if they were in my situation, even though it means they now have one less iPhone to sell to a new customer (sorry if that is you reading this!). I had paid for 2 hours on a parking meter thinking it was going to be a nightmare but I was in and out of the store in little over 20 minutes, can't do better than that :-)

My replacement iPhone is setup and works perfectly and even though my first 4S was faulty, I have a smile on my face and am sitting here typing this forum post instead, wanting to publicly thank Telecom for just being great. It's not very often you see something positive said about a company on a forum as we're all too quick to post when we have problems, but very few people follow up or post good experiences.

A special mention to Amber and Peter on these forums and Matthew and Daimon in store, along with the other staff I meet and chatted with both last night and this afternoon while there. Thanks guys.

Right, enough posting here, I have some serious Siri time to be getting on with :-)

I totally echo the sentiments about the Telecom Wellington team. I can't remember the last time I felt so valued as a customer, so very positive about taking my business to another company.

Meanwhile all the rest of us who ordered online still have no tracking numbers and no confirmation that their orders have shipped.

I do feel for you as I know how frustrated I would be in the same situation, which of course I was until I decided to take the plunge last night and join the street party. As you know I had ordered direct from Apple as soon as preorders opened, was given a delivery date of 14-21 November, truly thought they would have dispatched for delivery today but alas not. Unless I have missed posts from the Apple preorderers they have not received notification either.

I am sure hearing that other people have their iPhones in their grubby hands when you don't is frustrating, I know I would feel the same as you in your situation. And probably hearing that I have had problem with my first 4S and had a good experience from Telecom getting a replacement is most likely quite grating on you, but I still feel it isfair thing to commend a company when they have given great service instead of filling the thread with just bad experiences.

That doesn't take away from your posts about not having received notification of dispatch yet which I hope you will hear of very soon and then we can start bitching about how Siri and the 4S works instead of when we are going to get hold of one :-)

Really hope you all hear its on it's way very soon to turn your disappointment into excitement again

I understand and yes it is frustrating. They said in my first initiated email that I could cancel the order and get a refund. I asked how long it would take over the phone as they weren't sure by email, I was told a few days. Of course, Westpac being Westpac that normally means a few weeks by the time they process it, as has happened in the past. So I decided it was probably best to just leave it all as is and hope for the best. Meanwhile i'm curious how much they are paying their CSRs an hour cause i'm just going to keep ringing until it gets shipped, if effect wasting their money when they could have just shipped it earlier today. I've also noticed that they've started ignoring me by email and twitter now. Unfortunately, you can't really ignore me when I call.

Yell

I think I will steer clear of them for the near future.

There's not anything I can say apart from I feel for you. It would be nice to think preordering would mean you are ahead of the queue and will receive your iPhone close to launch, preferably on the day of launch, but beyond requesting information, you will not speed up delivery by making the life hell for CSRs. Everyone who preordered from Apple is in the same situation (as far as I know) so its nothing personal against you.

Even with the delay you are experiencing, this is still the smoothest iPhone launch I have been witness to, and this is my second in New Zealand. The first three in the UK were a complete fiasco, not being able to preorder and racing between shops only to find they kept selling out just before I got there. It took 2 weeks of running around to get my 3G, now that really is annoying!

You will get it soon, and you'll love it when you do, and hopefully that will make up for the pain you're currently feeling.

Unless I'm missing something I don't really understand what the issue is here. When I pre-ordered mine on Friday last week I was quoted a delivery date range of 14-21 November and that's still showing on my order status, so as long as they despatch the goods by Friday of next week then they will be meeting their commitment.

It will be nice to finally get my new toy, but it's not a life and death situation so I don't see the point of getting wound up about it.

Ah but they said in the email sent on the 8th: "You can expect delivery between 3 to 5 days." which is between Friday, Saturday and Sunday. So I'm expecting it to arrive today or tomorrow (as they said) as the couriers don't tend to ship on Sundays. Not only was I misled into believing this I was also mislead into believing it would "be shipping today" (direct quote from two different CSRs) which also seems to not quite be the case.

Sorry, I think I may have mis-read your post. I understood that you had pre-ordered from Apple but I now understand that you may have actually pre-ordered from Telecom.

Either way it's fair enough for you to expect them to deliver on their promise.

It actually said it would be 3-5 days after launch on the 11th. Those 3-5 days will most likely be working days too, so with the weekend that's really 5-7 weekdays. Tough I know but best to take the info at the worst case scenario and be happy when it's better than that.

Update: Well it said that on the website, I'm not saying the info wasn't different in your email

It would certainly have been nice to have Telecom send the phones out today yes. But we didnt know what to expect on this launch...  Most thought the scrambling would have been manic; turns out there were plenty of units (bar 64gb) about.  Anyway, thats why I preordered... might not do it next time

Yes, it's quite unprecedented for so much stock to be available in store. I'm if sure those of us who stayed up through the night to get our hands on one knew we might just have had a good nights sleep too and gone today instead but none of us knew. I had an order online with Apple AND went along last night because I never believed there would be good stock. Worst bit is, who knows what will happen with the next iPhone, if people let their guard down thinking all will be ok and there will be plenty of stock we might be back to square one one scrambling around to get one as there aren't many available!

What it said on the website, what it said in the email and what the CSR reps all said was different. This was the primary reason for me ordering from Telecom vs. Vodafone: the communication was clear initially but it is no longer so. Next time I think its very clear: order straight from Apple.

I find it ironic how the carriers both say oh we can't send it out before the launch day to you so it arrives on the day but they seem to be able to manage it for their own stores. Really shows you where their priorities are, doesn't it?
