scottjpalmer: I had not one issue right through the whole process.

Notifications are good, the seamlessness of iMessage is great, all good here.

Ditto. All working well & once I figured out iCloud now have calenders syncing across my macbook, ipad & iphone.

Awesome !

jonherries: The ability to set an APN seems to have been removed.

This concerns me. Have any 2degrees users upgraded successfully or are APN settings only available for Telecom/Vodafone?

I lost my APN settings when I upgraded but managed to put them back in

But I get a error when I tell itunes to check for updates, something about it unable to check the carrier update.

Like the double tap on home button to get to the camera when you phone is locked. Have always found it annoying - photo opp, pull out iPhone, hit home button, enter pin, find camera icon, hit it, wait... photo opp gone. Now - photo opp, pull out iPhone, double tap home button, tap camera button, take picture using sound up button :)

I've upgraded two 2degrees handsets, and haven't experienced any issues yet. It had lost the APN names, but I was able to re-enter these via Settings->General->Network->Cellular Data Network

Thanks Djshadow and Dclegg. It sounds like I'm safe to upgrade.

I'm on 2degrees. After upgrade mobile data worked fine (in 2deg zone) even though the internet APN had been wiped. MMS settings were retained through the upgrade. When I went to use the Personal Hotspot last night I had to re-enter the tethering APN for the hotspot option to be enabled but this (along with the mibile data APN configuration fields) is just the same as with iOS4.

I'm wondering about iMessage. I've got an iPhone, an iPod touch, and my wife has an iPad (wifi only), and we're all logged in using the same Apple ID for purchases from the Apple Store. As I understand it, iMessage uses the Apple ID to identify a person on iMessage (effectively treating it like email, it seems, but without going through a mail server), so if multiple devices use the same Apple ID, then it kind of butchers iMessage. Am I right, or have I missed something?

You would need separate ID's you cant have a conversation with effectively yourself. ( same ID) So yeh you are right. You could just setup another ID just for the ipad, keeping your purchases with one apple id ( the group one) and the ipad using another id for the imesaage purposes, i use 2 Id's on the same device, one for the cloud, and one for itunes.

Advice needed

I just got an iPad2. I have an iPad1 with many apps, and photos.

1. Should I get the iPad1 up and running with iOS5 first then connect the ipad2 to restore from that iOS5 backup?

2. I will need to sync the photos again? I will do that by cable.

Does this seem the best way?

Given the current apparent rush to do iOS 5 upgrades and the possibly flakiness of Apple servers and the like, I would treat the transfer and iOS upgrade as two separate distinct events,

Backup your Ipad and restore your Apps/Photos etc onto the Ipad2 ala this
http://www.macworld.com/article/158497/2011/03/migrating_from_an_old_ipad.html

Then deal with the iOS 5 upgrade of either/both devices,

Sure you might end up spending a bit more time doing it this way, but the last thing you want is for something to go phut in the middle of the process and you lose any data.

The fewer things you are juggling at once, the less likely anything will get dropped.

Appreciate that wellygary.

Do the business on the proven and working iOS4 then upgrade. Will do, and thanks

I just tested an XT micro-sim in my iphone, it received a carrier update and was able to check for software updates fine.
Put my 2degrees sim back in, no carrier update and unable to check for software updates

One last query. Does it matter if the iOS version differs slightly? Both devices arent here with me right now,  but the iPad1 is on latest iOS4 and I assume iPad2 purchased yersterday at DSE is also on an iOS4 version. If the iPad2 is not the exact iOS4 version does that matter?
