Something like these would save on power and be as good if not better than an old PC in the same price range

Again, I need the flexibility of a full Windows desktop. For one thing, I may have to go to a LAN cable if my wi-fi isn't up to the job. For another, I want to be able to easily switch DNS proxies from the computer (not the router). I already know I can do all these things and more from a Windows machine. Anything else introduces uncertainties.

This is something I didn't think of. I also need the audio to go through HDMI (preferable) or at least optical or coax digital out (less preferred). I want to use my Sony TV as the monitor, and I presently have it set up to pass digital audio through HDMI to the amp. This is much simpler than anything else.

does HDMI audio need an extra cable from Video card - Motherboard? that used to be the case many moons ago

This runs full Windows 8.1 the same as a traditional pc so unless you mean full desktop as in size this is exactly the same just smaller

I was vaguely aware of these but this is essentially a new idea for me. I have looked at the site and checked out some reviews and I am intrigued. If this would really do what I want then I might go for it. What I want is mainly just smooth browser streaming with video and audio via HDMI and Windows flexibility so I can install the browsers and media players of my choice as well as multiple DNS proxies with a proxy switcher. I guess my other main question would be about the reliability of this. Someone else also pointed that out and I have not had good luck with cheap Chinese electronics.

pbtech sell refurbished pcs quite cheap. lots of core 2 duos. personally I wouldn't buy something that old, but for $100 they arent bad.

I do have dual core pc's which I am getting OUT of the small factor cases. I am after small factor cases (empty ones or with power supply), HP with the sliding top are good for me and rack mout type are even better. Will swap working MB's and whatever periferial I might have like Lan, GPU, Screen, Keyboard for cases. In Auckland only.
