Not quite for sale yet, but will be very soon. Just thought I'd see what this is worth.

HP ML310E Gen 8

 

2x 8GB 1600MHz ECC Memory Modules

 

4x Constellation CS SATA 2TB 7200RPM

 

Purchased mid 2013.

 

This was my parents' small business server. One of the drives failed in a RAID set up 8 months ago.

 

On the invoice it actually says "3 year next day hardware warranty". Unfortunately their IT guy retired, and the server was purchased through him. Based on that we're actually still covered, but I'm not sure how claim the warranty. I assume the warranty covers the server and not the drives. Any advice?

 

I don't think I could include the drives if sold (for security reasons).

 

What do you think the server + the RAM are worth? Would anyone be interested? Thanks : )

Put the servers serial number into the HP warranty checker, it will tell you if the server as a whole has a manufacturers warranty still. If it does the drives should be covered.

Thanks Lias. Looks like it's covered. The serial numbers of the drives are listed on the invoice too, I do wonder if they were purchased separately and added to the server, which would mean they're not covered. Entered the serial numbers into the HP system and it didn't return anything.

 

Let's say the drives are covered. Would a screenshot showing the drive failure be enough? Or would they send someone out? By the way, just looked at the screenshot, and 2/4 drives failed.

The drives will be covered if they were original HP drives.

They should have an HP sticker with SN and PN numbers on them.

Edit: the drives may have a separate warranty if they are not HP supplied, you may be able to get them replaced by the manafacturer

Hi Clint,

Thanks for your advice. I'm yet to open up the server to have a look. It's still running at the moment, and I try to not to interfere with anything. Just a quick google of "Constellation CS" suggests that they are Seagate drives. Looks like we may be out of luck, wouldn't expect them to have a 3 year warranty. Tried the Seagate warranty checker, but I don't have the model number. Will open it up and have a look at some point.

 

Can anyone give me a general idea of its value?

Thanks for that info. I don't have the login for the server, that's why it's slightly difficult. I think we'll move everything away from the server, then I'll open it up and have a look. 

 

Never thought about depreciation. I'll see what value is sitting at.

Thanks for the interest guys, I'll update the thread when we decide to sell. Will hopefully be within the next few weeks.

Just call HPE Support and provide them the SN of the server.

 

Tell them you have a failed drive - just provide them the part number and they will ship out a replacement.

 

You then ship back the faulty unit and they will provide a returns courier label too.

Hi Guys,

I have removed the drives from the server. They are Seagate drives as expected. And after checking online, they still within the warranty period. However, Seatools says they are fine, and they seem to work fine connected to my macbook air.

I guess this means that the issue must have been related to the server itself. The issue was never really troubleshooted properly, so it could be something very minor. Luckily the server is covered by warranty until 15/05/16.

 

 

 

I'm now open to offers.

 

You don't have to take everything. Here's what's available:

• HP ML310E Gen 8 Server
• 2x 8GB 1600MHz ECC Memory Modules (there are 4 slots)
• 2 drive carriers currently, but there will be 4 included (I've burred a few screws, so I'm struggling to get 2 drives out).
• Windows Small Business Server 2011 discs in original case with product key sticker etc.
• HP UPS T1500 and cables - As far as I know it's in good working order. Been running round the clock connected to the server.
• HP wired mouse and keyboard
• Phillips 190B monitor and cables

 

No drives included for the time being. Unless I can convince my parents that they can be securely wiped.

 

Will take some photos in the next few days.

Boot up the server with DBAN and run it for 24hrs. There is no chance in hell of your data being recovered after that then rebuild the RAID.

Thanks for that suggestion. I'm totally out of my depth when it comes to the server, so I'm best to avoid that route. Am I able to download DBAN to my Mac and wipe the drives that way? I have a USB adapter for the drives. Thanks for your help.

 

That solves the problem with the burred screws too. I'll just leave the drives in carriers for the new owner.

I guess there's 4x Seagate Constellation 2TB drives included as well now. Again, they should all be working fine. Seatools says they are. And if they're not, they're still covered by Seagate until May this year.
