I'm looking for some old bits and pieces to put together a basic gaming PC for my 8 year old son.

Ideally looking for something around i3-2100 or i5-2400 CPU/mobo or equiv with a similar era GPU

Anyone got anything they are looking to offload?

How much are you looking to spend?  I've got a full blown PC on there with i7 3770 and gpu (and os) further down this list but I've also got a i5 2400 and more memory here too.

ideally as little as possible :)

He's managed to get about $120 from saving up job money and his birthday, and i've said i'd top him up. But i doubt we're talking 3770 money :)

I might have some ram (4gb??) floating around somewhere that you could have for the cost of shipping. I'll take a look when I get home and see what I've got.

What games is he playing?
Sit on trademe for a bit, There was a user offering me an I7 http://ark.intel.com/products/65524/Intel-Core-i7-3770S-Processor-8M-Cache-up-to-3_90-GHz (For a bloody good price with 4GB of DDR3 1600, I PM''d them to see if its still available without name dropping. Go grab a board that support permanent turbo clocking or what ever its called so it doesnt throttle back and you have a 3770 that goes well.

He's not playing anything particularly testing, a couple of low end steam games (house war or something) terarria, but wants to play some old school 1st person shooters. (think UT3/ BFBC2 type games)

I've had a look at the 1155 gen3 gear there seems to be a number of the  CPUs around for really good money but not as many motherboards any of the MBs i've seen have been pretty pricey. (Hence the looking at sandy bridge era instead)

To be honest anything over an i3 2100 would probably do :)

grab something like this :

http://www.trademe.co.nz/computers/desktops/no-monitor/auction-1380156568.htm

http://www.trademe.co.nz/computers/desktops/no-monitor/auction-1385137339.htm

and then put in a half height GPU (GTX 1030 or RX550 new) .. or move the parts into a new case to support a 2nd hand GTX5xx / GTX 6xx etc

there seem to be plenty like this going cheap too :

http://www.trademe.co.nz/computers/desktops/no-monitor/auction-1384632154.htm

just add GPU

yeah i looked at the SFF pc option and its seems a reasonable idea. Do they use standard size motherboards these days?  The ones i've found so far have either been non-standard motherboards and not enough room (length normally) for a cheap graphics card.

As for the cheap $1 res auctions, yeah i've been keeping an eye on them. No luck so far.

Ideally i want parts, if we can turn this into a lesson in saving for what you want as well as a this is how you put a PC together then all the better. But i'm open to anything at the moment, hence the post here to see what my options are like

Spesh,

The case etc is to heavy to send down, extremely heavy case and i dont have a box for it,   but i can take out the atx asus mobo/AMD Quad Core Cpu/ram/psu and that can be sent down

make a offer if you want via PM, it was a former HTPC

shipping is probably around 10-12$ or so
