I'm not sure if this is the right forum to post in, but looking at the usage guidelines and other posts, I assume so.

Thought I'd let you all know about a free way to send txt messages via the web to New Zealand mobiles. If you signup and activate (verify you own) your number, you can send text messages from your own mobile number so people can reply directly to your mobile phone.

http://www.websms.co.nz

The only restriction is 5 messages per hour.

It looks good, but why does it want so much information about me to sign me up? Facebook requires less.

I think you'll probably scare a few people off (count me in that group) unless you reduce the amount of information collected.

Not too much information on that site. No privacy info or terms and conditions that I could find. That is the number one fault that will stop me from signing up.

It is funded by pop under ads, another minus in my book. My opinion is; if you are displaying ads, display them in the browser. Don't try and control my browser by getting it to open new windows.

There is no contact info on the site either (not even a form to ask questions). Another minus from me.

The site mentions paid texts, but doesn't (as far as I can see) offer any pricing.

What is to stop users abusing this service for things like text bullying etc...? In my opinion having users sign up would be a better idea.

This service doesn't seem to work to my phone. I have an 027 number, but it's on Vodafone's network.

It's the same with Skype as well, it can't text me. Very weird and annoying.

websms.co.nz is included in the text message so the receiver knows where the message came from. Should they receive spam or bully messages, they have the ability to blacklist their number from receiving messages from the free service. The blacklist feature sends a verification code to the user and they enter it into our site, once verified, any further messages to their number will be blocked and the sender will be advised that the user has blacklisted their number.

The terms need some work but will be completed soon, at this stage we don't send any spam or share details, I have put a link to the terms from the signup page into the main menu.

Contact details have now been included but a contact form will be available soon.

That's odd, generally an HLR query is done to see what network you are with as one of my test handsets is an 027 number on vodafone. I will run some further tests this evening, let me now if the text does finally come through or not.

How will you make money out of this? People who use it won't end up being spammed with advertisements?

SRRI lookup is done first before HLR lookup is done

404: http://www.websms.co.nz/edit_account.php

I sent myself one and it came from 6421766xxx not +6421766xxx

the popunder (or popovers depending what browser you are using are very anoying)

I can try and activate my number twice and it says
Your message has been sent to 021766xxxDuplicate entry '21766xxx' for key 2
Already present in database, please contact webmaster.
and it sends the SMS again!
and I got a 3rd activation TXT for some reason again..

I can try and verify numbers which are not mobile phone numbers
I can find no way of removing numbers

I could log in/use it before I verified my email via the email I got to my email address

It says when you login: email but the box to enter the details in says Username. a little confusing

You can't be a user and advertiser at the same time?

when you verify it says something about adding to a blacklist.. I just went passit it but I think the wording was wrong maybe?

No, no one will be spammed, we will not send TXT's to people with adverts, nor will we sell or provide user data to anyone.

Funds will be made from advertising on the site (popup) and from paid services such as bulk txt which is due to be released in the next couple of weeks. There will also be an OPT-IN option for site owners and marketing which I cannot go into at this stage until it's out in the open.

The bottom line is we will never send you messages you don't ask to be sent, othe than those your friends send you
