Following your update I have ordered the one linked by @davidcole - is there anything specific I should know if I want to set this up with Traccar (which I already have running and working)?

I will be using a 2Degrees SIM (PAYG) with data sharing from my main contract. I suspect I might need some credit in order to use SMS to setup?

This is the port I use:
5002

So that's the protocol it uses. Yes you will need sms credit, just so it can respond with ok.

Great thanks. Will endeavour to update this when I have got and tested it.

I now have this devices and have wired it up and set it up with a SIM card and got it talking to my Traccar server via the un-documented command mentioned above. I'm wondering @davidcole what tracking method you use, and what command(s) you used to set it up. I have managed to stop it calling me whenever it moved after staying stationary, but have had a trip where it was online/offline, and now it just seems to report on power on. I'm still experimenting, but any hints appreciated!

@phrozenpenguin

Look these up but I run:

*rsampling*10* - set sampling rate in seconds

*rupload*20*

*routetrack*99* - this is the big one that sets it to upload contantly

*multiquery* if you have more than one device that can send sms to it (probably specific to me as I had a seperate phone for texting it)

*alertoff* else it'll ring/sms you

If you set a sampling rate too quick it'll get in a loop. One thing I haven't figured out, is with my old one it ws fast enough I could actually get an alert set up when over 105km, this one I can't get it to do that. it seems to store waypoints and upload in batches. Could possibly play with the rupload and set that much smaller. but hey it's working, so I just leave it.

Thanks. I'm still experimenting.

In Traccar, does it flick online/offline (online immediately after upload, offline soon after, until next upload)? I haven't worked out yet if there is a specific combination of timeouts required, but on devices with more confugration settings you would set it to keep the connection open. It seems this drops the connection after each upload.

I haven't looked into alerting yet.

No traccar does seem to think it's online. Not sure how low you could set that rupload and see if it constantly uploads.

Thanks. I think this has resolved my issue. Interestingly the manual says a lower limit of rupload of 60sec - but 20 as you describe seems to work.
