Basically trying to see if I can install different map packs on it I have stuck heaps of different programmes on there via SD Card like iGO8 and TomTom exacutables etc, but I'm new to this and probably doing something wrong.

I have looked through the SD Card and found the programme that is in use at the moment called Mobile Navigator, and a few readme files named something called "Goldfinger."

I've read this runs on Win.Net CE 5.0 and you can do a bit with it but from the splash screen theres only a few options navigation, music, photo, Ebook, video, system no files I transfered onto SD showed in any of the catogoroes as I tried them all.

Any advice people or am I wasting my time just want better maps as these aren't the best.

I don't have one of those gps devices but have been looking into it.
There are a few possibile ways to change out the software, however I would start by making a backup of the sd card.

If you look at the settings menu it may have an option to change the path to the gps software so you can set it to load the software you want, if not you could try to find the gps software executable on the sd card and replace it with yours.

Also you can try putting it in the photos folder and launch it using the photo viewer. This should cause an exception and the wince menu should load, allowing you to do whatever you want in wince.

No guarantees however.
Good luck

bear in mind, sometimes the standard maps cannot be backed-up and restored as the licence maybe registered to that card ID
