nickd: I may be making a stupid comment here, but GPS and communications satellites are different birds altogether. Pretty sure graemeh was talking about using communications satellites in his comment, where as you are talking about GPS.

I was but didn't bother to say anything as both signals can be blocked.

Rollux: Does anyone know if this is possible?
I do a fair bit of hunting alone and would like for my wife to be able to track my location in case I get injured and cannot get back to my vehicle. I see many solutions which work brilliantly with a cell signal via data sent over the 3G network, but most of the time i am out of signal coverage.
Phone is a nokia 5800.

Surely each GPS device must have an identifier so the satellites know which unit they are sending to at any one time?

Get yourself a satellite phone; you can get 2nd hand ones cheaply and you can buy small enough amounts of airtime to cover emergency use.

You can also txt to them (from a pc) for free.

PM if you want more info, I have a sat phone that is surplus to requirement.

No problem, they are close enough that it really didn't matter.

I'm Very interested in one of these (doing Clarence river in January). Don't mind the $400 purchase price, but the annual cost (US$ 169, I think, for continuous track) is pretty steep.
Anyone know if there is anything to stop someone buying in to the system and leasing the unit out to recover costs?
