Introduces 60, 200, and 1000GB plans

With its revolutionary Orcon Genius device being a big hit among broadband customers and with data consumption on the rise, Orcon announces three new broadband data plans – including an industry-leading 1000GB plan.

The new plans are available to new and existing customers from Monday 23 April, and feature 60GB, 200GB and 1000GB monthly caps.

As well as offering more data, the new plans deliver big savings for customers who are looking for a data boost.

The Genius 60GB plan is $89-a-month, 200GB for $99-a-month, and 1000GB for $199-a-month.

The Orcon Genius $75-a-month base plan, which includes a VOIP phone, remains unchanged with users able to choose between either 5GB of data plus unlimited national calling or 30GB of data.

Orcon CEO Scott Bartlett says the new Orcon Genius data plans are designed to make it easier and more affordable for Kiwis to access the growing range of exciting online content available to consumers.

”For too long Kiwis have needed to watch their data use, and restrict their internet use for fear of racking up a big bill. We hope our new plans will encourage people to get more out of the net.

“Our 200GB and 1000GB base plans are industry leading, and with ultra-fast fibre broadband on its way we all want bigger data caps.”

The Orcon Genius was launched in 2011 and is New Zealand’s first mass-market device that makes full use of the internet’s potential, putting phone calls over a broadband connection. The fibre-ready device also doubles as a wireless modem – creating a complete telecommunications package in a small and sleek device.

I am glad that I moved to Telecom a few weeks ago. Yeah, new plans, higher data caps, but it is Genius only.

But not everyone wants Genius.

It's not clear from their site but is so special about Genius? Is it you have to have VoIP? Does the $99 include VoIP?

The site says if you have Genius you cannot have a landline but what if you have a TCL landline which does not come from the Telecom cabinets or whatever? How could they stop that?

I think if you had the landline on something other than the copper used to provide the genius adsl service then you could keep it.

Genius is a Naked DSL product with VOIP Embedded in the device, It also includes a VOIP line and a few other features I believe.

It is not currently possible to have Voice and ADSL with different providers (Telecom with other providers ADSL being the occasional exception I believe)

What do you mean by voice? We have adsl with slingshot and landline with telecom, is this the exception you speak of?

And I'm one of those people who don't want Genius. So if these plans are not passed on to the normal people who have been with them like me since Voyager folded then it may be off to Telecom..

I had their fone service once but never again..

Ah, Yes, I should have been more specific but cant think of the correct term

By voice I mean Landline Home Phone (Not VOIP)

As far as I know Telecom are the only company that will provide Home Phone services with another providers ADSL service on the same line, Which I believe they may only allow if the other provider is using their ADSL equipment too.

I am guessing you hated Genius because of the VoIP service?

Hypothetically you could sign up for Genius, take their home phone as part of the package and just not use it if you had an alternative like TCL's phone line service. I am pretty sure my home is wired at the demarc for Telecom phone service as well as the new TCL wiring I had put in. Of course to get the signal up to the outlets would require some wiring which I couldn't do. But I did have a second phone line put in a few years ago (TCL) and they wired it to new jack points in the house. So I could potentially look to see where the Telecom wires come in and have them wired up to the second pair TCL put in from the demarc and have the DSL carried over that.

I can't use their phone service since I have a monitored alarm.

I am only thinking about it because 200GB looks attractive but I have no idea what the speed would be like.

It's not clear to me if the $99 for 200GB also included the modem and phone service.

The Genius plan is great.
Essentially these new plans are winners.
Let me break it down for those who don't seem to get it.

Genius is a Naked DSL + VOIP Service ok.....
The idea is that you take the modem they provide. This modem is the BoB.
BoB is a generally state of the art VOIP Capable modem with wireless and storage capabilities also.
It is a pretty damn good modem.

There are two versions of BoB.

BoB Lite which does not come with a handset, rather you plug your own Phone into it and it runs over the Internal VOIP hardware of the modem.

The other, the Regular BoB, has a handset (its black and fairly sexy) included AS WELL AS the option to plug in your own Phone. Essentially giving you the option of TWO Phones (for any tards who're struggling, its like having two landlines, separate nubmers for each).

VOIP is the landline killer PROVIDED you don't have sh*tty phone lines.
VOIP is a cheaper phone service compared to a conventional landline in regards to call pricing and phone functions such as Caller ID, 3-way calling etc are generally provided for free.
The only downside to VOIP is that it relies on your connectivity.
If your Net goes down, your Phone goes with it.
Also if you have a Monitored alarm, then that's not gonna work....
BUT provided you have healthy wiring, you pay your bill and have a few knives and baseball bats stashed around the place as your Alarm System.
You will never lose your connection.

The Genius service and plans are flawless. The only reason you would have an issue with this service is because your sh*t sucks. Well, to be fair, its Telecom's fault because the wiring at your location is crap... be it old and degraded by time or because the nature of your house made it difficult for a quality wiring job to be done by the tech who visited the site.

So yeah thats pretty much the jist of it.

Here's what im getting.

For $99 i am going to get 200 Gigs of data per month and a Phone. (Voip)

That's the best deal available to date based on my research.
It's is a very good deal.

As for speeds. Well.

INTERNET

Mode: G.992.5 (ADSL2+)
Download: 22194 Kbps.
Upload: 1019 Kbps.
WAN IP: 121.98.128.29
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.255
Gateway: 60.234.8.201
Primary DNS: 121.98.0.1
Secondary DNS: 121.98.0.2

I sync at 22 and average 19Mbps on Speedtest to Vodafone
And thats not on a good day, I've had better than that.

But TBH that has nothing to do with my ISP, i live fairly close to the exchange and have healthy wiring.
I've had the same score range with a range of ISPs.

What if you power goes off, does the phone still work, like it does for fixed line non cordless phones? How about if the BB connection goes down. I think I would still want a fixed line. If you want VOIP you can always use skype or another provider.

Like i said, if the net goes down, so does your phone so yeah, power is crucial. But i can't recall the last time there was a power cut where i live.

I mean we could get into all kinds of theoretical situations like when there's a poltergeist running amok and it's severed the power line outside and you cant call the ghost-busters but in my years using this service i have never had an issue, a power cut or missed a phone call. Not that anyone under 50 uses a land-line anyway.

With such an insignificant difference in price in most cases I fail to see how replacing a Landline with VOIP actually outweighs the problems and annoyances associated with the type of technology.
