What is the cable loss number used for NZ? It defaults to 13.81 but I know my DS Attentuation is 2dB which calculates my connection at 90 but it's 70.

I believe that 13.81 is correct.

chorus use higher snr margins than other countries typically do.  it's actually impossible to sync at 24 megabit in nz on non-llu adsl (actually there's a kind of cheat called snr tweaking) .  vdsl is likely to be the same.

that said, you'd probably not notice much difference between 70 and 90.

Sounds intriguing!

You can do that on the FritzBoxes too but it does void the warranty in order to do so.
Napster has details on how to go about it last time I checked.

Is that because you have to activate telnet in order to do the tweak?

basically on broadcom asdl modems you can telnet (or ssh with some) and then you can get a shell (admin/admin is default username/password)

you can then do something like:

> adsl configure --snr 30

to get a lower snr

you can do:

> adsl info

to find out if you're synced yet

and

> adsl info --stats

to see the normal system information

you can raise that 30 to a higher number to have a higher snr margin.  and you can lower it to get a lower snr margin.  the lower the snr margin the higher chance you have for dropouts, but also for increased sync rate.  if you want a snr margin below 6db you have to "cheat" by having a really high number like 65520 where it wraps around with 65535.   still the same rule - lower number lower snr margin - minimum i think is something like 65450, but that's likely to be unstable.

if it screws up you can always reboot - it won't persist across a reboot, but it will across a resync.  it's generally only good for a megabit or two though, and you can't adjust the up speed.

i'm curious if the fritzbox has a way to alter snr.

Yes it writes something to the PCB and it will always say it's unsupported by the manufacture and no matter how many factory resets or firmware down/up grades etc that you do it won't go away.

Can you adjust the upstream snr margn?

Geez, that's a bit harsh!!  Surely you can't actually damage the hardware via some kind of telnet command!?

Well that's just from experience, Did it on mine and can't get rid of it and same with a mate who's got one.
I asked AVM about it and they've said they can't offer support for it.

Oh don't get me wrong, I believe you, but I can't believe that AVM would take such a hard line with telnet access!?

I think it's mainly cause of what you can do with the telnet access, I only used it cause I was running a PABX behind my fritz and needed to port forward 5060 to an IP rather than the device itself.

that seems a pretty big limitation.

Apparently you can reset that no support warning by running the fritzbox recovery tool.

Also to change the Training SNRM you have to edit the cfg file through telnet.
